Welcome to Georgia, our eighth Northwest territory reader submission to our Green @ Home giveaway. Jump below for pics and details.

Tell us about 1 green move/tip/solution that you've implemented: I grow vegetables and herbs in a 1 foot by 10 foot strip on the west side of our duplex. Recently, I joined Forage Oakland and exchanged mint and rosemary for dried lavender (our lavender died during the first week of this summer's heat wave) and green walnuts (for nocino).

Explain your challenge and/or frustration!: First, I wish the garden strip was wider. We rent so cannot expand the strip. There is room on the stoop but it's filled with ornamental plants - beautiful to behold by us and delicious to the hummingbirds.

Second, I wish I could store the winter rainfall in a cistern for use during the dry summer, especially this summer. The East Bay Municipal Utility District has issued water rationing which affects Berkeley.

Explain your inspiration!: I am fascinated with and inspired by nature-made landscapes like the butterfly habitat garden in a traffic circle in my Berkeley neighborhood (butterflies have been documented using the space - to feed and to reproduce); the ecology park based on southern Ontario plant associations in The Annex neighborhood in Toronto, pictured above; and the vacant house lot in New Haven, Conn. that was transformed into a bird habitat - the Ivy Narrow Bird Preserve - and certified by the National Wildlife Federation. Photos of the latter project can be seen here.

Extra Green Move: Several in fact: (1) Green compost bin in the kitchen; (2) Appliances are unplugged when not in use with the exception of the refrigerator; (3) Indoor trash bins are not lined with bags (plastic or otherwise); (4) Jam jars and Pom juice jars reused as storage or drinking glasses (sadly Pom now packages its juices in plastic); and (5) Most of the time, canvas or multi-use bags are used for groceries. The Chico Bag pictured below was distributed at the 2007 California Releaf urban forestry conference.

Thanks, Georgia!
