Like Faith over at The Kitchn, I had the pleasure of harvesting my very first tomatoes of the season this week. However, I didn't have any questions as to how I would prepare the first precious beauties because they hopped straight from the vine into my belly. No wondering if they were organic, salmonella-free or pesticide-free and no fretting over the oil or carbon emissions produced by transporting the tiny tomatoes hundreds of miles for my eating pleasure. Those are just a few of the reasons why our home garden is growing exponentially....
1st round of plum harvest
We were lucky enough to move into a home that boasted several heavy producing fruit trees, but we've since added to the list. Though not as immediate as the vegetable garden, in just a few years time we shouldn't be lugging much produce home from the market. When we planted our trees, we made a grocery list of the fruit we buy year round and tried to plant one of each. Just to get your mouth watering, here's what we look forward to: lemons, grapefruit, oranges, figs, plums, pears, nectarines, apricots and persimmons.
more plums waiting to be harvested
As for the vegetable garden, it's in top shape with plans for a fall/winter planting coming up. We've been enjoying fresh zucchini, arugula, butter lettuce and herbs lately with more tomatoes, corn, peas and peppers on the horizon. Now that I have a tiny bit of experience under my belt, I'm looking forward to expanding the vegetable garden for next year and can't wait to try my hand at some of the more daunting vegetables on our grocery list.
