We do yoga in our living room. We've had the same old blue mat for many years and it's icky. Old, tired - ready for retirement. But now that we have to dispose of it we realize that it feels like a big hunk of junky pvc that we are sending out into the world - and we set out to find a green mat to replace it.
Success! The Eco Yoga Mat.

It is a sticky mat that is PVC-free. It is made from jute fiber and natural rubber with no synthetics. And, when this one needs to be retired...it's biodegradable.
On sale now for $28.50 at Barefoot Yoga Co.

I always wondered how the practice that emphasizes being one with the earth and nature could be so unfriendly to the earth while practicing it...thanks for finding these!
for what it's worth, hang on to your old mat for projects that require protecting the floor, like painting. Though not terribly big, it's great to put the paint trays on.
dollhouse,
i did keep the old mat and love that idea - thank you!
I am definitely getting one of these when the time comes to replace my current mat. Another possible re-use of a pvc mat would be as a cushion/non-slip mat under a small rug or runner.
If you're a committed yogi...splurge and get a MANDUKA black mat (or a similar thick, dense black mat). I've had mine for 7-years. I think it will last forever.
But black mats are heavy...so I have a regular mat that folds compactly for travel (and trips to the beach, etc etc)
Harmony mats are also pvc-free and made of biodegradable natural rubber - I use one and have been really happy with it.
