Are we ready for pee power?

NoPoPo Batteries are powered by squirting liquid into the cell. It seems they can run on nearly any type of liquid (beer, juice, saliva, etc.) but, incredibly, urine made the list too.

They can last (turned on) for 20 hours at a time and have a shelf-life (turned off) of about 10 years, which is much longer than standard batteries.

NoPoPo stands for "non-pollution power" and the batteries back that up by containing no harmful chemicals, such as mercury or lead.

So even though they can only be refilled up to five times, they no longer fall into the hazardous waste category.

CNet states that right now they're only available in Japan but we found them (and our photo) on this website.

since ..um.. you'd have to refill these i wouldn't.. erm.. use pee.. ever.

Pee is a lot cleaner than saliva, for the record.

While I'm in Japan, I'm going to have to pick some of these up and give them a try...
... with water, of course.

For the record, the box just says "Batteries you can use by just putting water inside" on the front, so they're not pushing that pee feature too hard, I guess.

I'll definitely have to check these out. Batteries are probably a huge part of ewaste, and thus cause a lot of clutter in the landfills. Not to mention the chemicals that come out of them. I hope that these catch on, at least a little. hey, maybe we can even get pee-powered cellphones.

I'm not sure these are really green, consider that@ 500 mAh and an average 3.5x recharge =1750mAh.
Your going to be throwing away almost twice as many of these as Alkaline batteries, and 1000-2000 of them for every NiMH.
Plus packaging and shipping for 1000 AA batteries, Yikes!

Also consider the cost 1000X$5 each = $5000
vs
$2 for a NiMH

You could probably find a MUCH more green thing to do with $4998.
