The ad said "You could even paint while you're pregnant." We confess we've been having exactly this urge lately. We were interested because unlike other brands we've used that are lo-voc (volatile organic compounds), this paint has zero voc's.
We've been happy with lo-voc paints in the past- hardly any fumes whatsoever, but pregnancy brings even more precautions. We checked out their website and there doesn't seem to be a dealer in our vicinity, but the color selection looks really great. Let us know if you've tried Mythic Non-Toxic Paint and would like to give a review!

I haven't tried Mythic, but in terms of availability and price, you can get relatively inexpensive zero VOC paint and Home Depot. They have their own line of zero VOC paints and zero VOC colorants called Fresh Aire. I haven't used any colored paints yet, but I've used their primer and ceiling paint, and it seems fine; good coverage, no strong odor. I think it's about $30/ gallon.

I'm all for supporting small independent business, but I'm also happy that these products are available for the masses at the big box stores...
I looked into this brand. I was disappointed that they didn't have samples you can order. There are no listed retailers close to my area (Columbus OH) and the best they could offer as far as a sample was a $16 quart.
I have been trying to find no VOC paint as well. I checked out the Fresh Aire line at Home Depot, but all of the colors are very muted and only come in gallon sizes. I am refinishing a restaurant style high chair and wanted a fun primary color, and really only need a pint. I have found a few other brands of no VOC paints that are brighter colors, although the nearest retailers that carry them are about an hour away. I will have to look into Mythic.
Sherwin-Williams makes all of their colors in a low-VOC paint (Duration) and a no-VOC paint (Harmony). The low-VOC is the hands-down best covering, richest color paint I've ever used (including some brands that were far, far more expensive). The no-VOC line is good, too. They're well-priced and have had low/no-VOC paint lines for years -- before "green" became trendy.
I just received a large order of Mythic Paint. I ordered online. If you have a retailer near you, then great. If not, I would order with extreme caution. Part of my order was not delivered. When I notified them of the problem, it was not a pleasant experience. Buyer beware.
Being a paint contractor for 40 years and using all brands (mostly Dunn Edwards) I was skeptical. But I had so many customers who were asking for a low VOC or no VOC paint (and many expectant mothers) that I could no longer ignore.
I found out that simply a low or even a no VOC paint was not enough. If you want a paint that is healthy for you and your family, you want a paint that is NON TOXIC.
Most paint that are labeled no VOC are loaded with cancer causing chemicals and other harmful substances that me and my workers (not to mention my customers) have been breathing. Personally, I think the low VOC and no VOC buzz words should be against the law to advertise (or the advertisor should be required to state exactly what it means). Very misleading.
I had to buy a color fandeck (for $25) and the nearest dealer (Greener Building Supply in Chatsworth California) to me was 50 miles away. I bought two gallons of flat paint and two gallons of tinted primer for my daughters nursery (shes expecting).
The first thing I immediately noticed was that the paint didnt smell. Then when I applied the paint, I couldnt believe how smooth the paint was. It just feels rich and you could tell instantly that this was a quality paint. The paint cleaned up easy with only water.
Long story short, I have used Mythic Paint on several homes and the story is the same every time. My customers love their home and they love me and I get more referrals as a result. The seemingly higher price (about $45 Gallon) is justified by another side benefit that I didnt realize. When I used their non-toxic primer, I only had to paint one coat to get a great finish (except for dark colors). So I actually finished the job sooner than expected and at less cost because of the quality.
Mythic Paint is Non-Toxic and is the best quality paint on the market. 1200 colors, I will never use another brand...period
Mythic paint is a brand everyone will hear about and eventually will use.
I have used Sherwin-Williams "harmony" paints in the past and liked them (no headache while painting!) but I'm pregnant and thought I'd try Mythic this time around.
Big Big disappointment. It goes on thin. THIN! Thinner than harmony, which I always thought seemed a bit thin. I used it in 2 different rooms and BOTH times needed two FULL coats and then a very heavy touch up coat - practically a 3rd coat. (one room was primed, one was not, same awful coverage each time.)
I ordered online ($40 per gallon, free shipping) and it arrived packed in a box of messy smashed up plastic packing peanuts. Huge mess unpacking the box, (and how un-eco friendly are those things??) and the paints had a plastic ring on the top to keep the lids secure for shipping, but were SO hard to remove! I wound up denting the cans trying to get those rings off.
I'll probably go back to harmony next time -- it's less expensive, covers better, much easier to obtain, and they just switched to a much nicer can - plastic lid and bottom so no rust around the rim when you reseal your paint.
I have used Yolo Colorhouse and was very pleased with the results. The compnay is founded by two designers and they edit the colors to eliminate mistakes around choosing colors. The colors are amazing and the performance of the paint is truly remarkable. It is currently distributed at the Home Depot in Vauxhall, NJ and at Green Depot. Check out their website for more details www.yolocolorhouse.com
I have also used YOLO Colorhouse recently. I painted my bedroom Stone .05 and I LOVE the results. I would recommend checking out this paint line...very impressed!
I LOVE Mythic paint. I painted my whole house with Mythic and I think that it is the best paint I have ever worked with. The paint is thick, it goes on great; and has amazing coverage. I dont know who said that they didnt like the paint; but I will stand by the fact that think it is the best paint I have ever used. Most of the other paints that say that they have no VOC's usually still do if you read their MSDS sheets..AND most paint stores use colorants that have VOC's in them so the whole point of using non-toxic paint is useless if the colorants have toxins!
I live in Fort Lauderdale and i found a great paint store that carrys Mythic as well as many other non-toxic home renovation products. www.browardmythicpaint.com
I studied paints for two years....i put all the green paints (few cover well) and the paints that were considered the best covering paints (despite their voc levels) in blind tests with no labels and asked my professional painter friends to test them....our conclusion...we now own a mythic paint store. We hear it all day everyday....the painters dont want to switch and they dont much care what they use as long as they can get off the job fast. The clients, especially the ones with kids or with chemical sensitivities all want to use the paint. The clients bring it home to the painters who are generally annoyed until they try it and then when they hear the price and see the way the paint covers and flows, they want to know where our store is.
The sad part of the whole story is that 99.9% of the paint sold in the country is toxic and carcinogenic. Most of the nasty chemicals in paint are not mandatory to disclose according to the law. Unfortunately, Zero voc is a legal term not a literal term. Frankly, I think a lot of the negative comments about mythic are posted by people who have a financial interest in other paints. BTW, we also use the most expensive, best and safest colorants and the MSDS sheet that lists the hazardous substances in the product is completely blank.
We match any color and we ship paint everywhere. www.smartlittlehouse.com
Could anyone comment on a comparison between benjamin moore's natura line and mythic? I have been curious about mythic but haven't bought any yet. Also, I am pregnant and slowly repainting the apartment. Thanks!
