Yes, we're still obsessed with chickens. If anything, ever since our neighbors got a chicken, the obsession has gotten worse. We hear it clucking every time we walk out to our car. We want one (or two). And when we get a couple, we want one of these modern coops from Urban Hens.
Urban Hens is an organization in Boulder, Colorado dedicated to "developing a sustainable model for establishing chickens in urban settings." They've also gotten themselves into the coop designing business.
You can't buy one of their coops yet, but they plan to ultimately sell them as kits. And we plan to buy one, when we have the chickens to fill it.

Many people think you have to have lots of chickens and even a rooster to have plenty of eggs. The truth is chickens will lay eggs with no rooster in site! Also three or four good laying hens will produce three or four eggs almost every day. That adds up to about 20 eggs or more each week! Usually that is plenty eggs for the average family.
Keeping a smaller number of chickens also makes feed bills smaller and care so much easier.
I have kept four hens on average in my backyard City Biddy Hen House (http://www.uBuilderPlans.com) for the last six years. They have kept my family in all of the fresh eggs that we need. In addition my hens make good use of any table or vegetable scraps, provide high quality fertilizer for my garden, eat insects in the yard and are pretty good company as well.
It is amazing how tame and friendly the chickens can become.
