It's Pet Month here at Re-Nest and while many of us love our dogs, cats, birds & other furry friends, other folks are prohibited by landlords, white carpet or allergies. Maybe it's just me, but the gift of a pet (think Lady & the Tramp) seems so romantic! Well, there's an eco-friendly, socially-conscious way to give a pet - even a water buffalo - and the best part? No cleanup required!
Heifer International is a wonderful non-profit organization that enables you to gift real animals to someone in need, on behalf of a friend or a love one. But unlike Fido, these animals have a job to do. Namely, feeding and providing transportation for people in developing nations. You can donate the name of that special someone: a "trio of rabbits," "a flock of geese," honeybees and our personal favorite, the water buffalo. Sure beats another assorted meat and cheese gift basket.
And don't worry, your special donation isn't simply destined for that nights' dinner table. Instead of giving temporary aid to improve the immediate situation of those in need, they partner with locals who are willing to work hard to train and care for the animals, and eventually gift the offspring's to someone else in need. Heifer International teaches the recipients to utilize the animal as a living resource, providing milk, eggs, and reproductive capabilities (the romance I spoke of earlier!).
The long-term sustainability of what Heifer International provides is admirable and for the right someone, this could be the perfect green pet gift.
