I would have wrapped the lower part with foam and/or batting and upholstered it. That way it would be functional and decorative. I don't care for the raw pallet look.
I love the look, I'm sure I'd bash my ankles a few times, but you'd learn to be careful!

This is cute! But I want the rest of the room to go with it. Especially the door used as the... headboard? Sideboard? whatever.
Being that I stub my toes on 'real' furniture all the time, I don't see how this would be so hazardous.
