While perusing the recently restored Ferry Building in San Francisco last week, I noticed this charming idea for re-purposing galvanized wash tubs as food bins. What a cute idea for a harvest party, lining up all your produce in one of these. (I know I have one lying around, just never thought of it in this context.) Sara Kate did something similar earlier this summer for a big garden party. See her photo after the jump.
Sara Kate served a large salad of baby greens, asparagus and amaranth to over 100 guests, in a large galvanized wash tub!
Update: Galvanized steel is not safe for acidic foods or liquids. To our understanding, though, it should be safe for dry or whole foods, such as vegetables, fruit, and snacks, although long term storage where severe temperature changes are possible is not advised. For extra precaution, simply line the tubs with a tea cloth before you put anything in them.

Clever idea for some items. That salad looks a bit like someone switched out the compost tub that's overdue for a turning for the salad tub, though.
Uhhh, didn't you read the comments for that last post? Galvanized metal is toxic and should NOT be used for food! These posts should be removed.
Yeah, I was taught in a food handlers safety course that galvanized metal should never be used for food storage. It's incredibly unsafe as the metal will leach into food. :/
This is very irresponsible. The zinc coating on galvanized metal can leach into food and cause heavy metal poisoning when consumed. This post should be taken down.
