Patrick Blanc is a French botanist, and his vertical gardens served as inspiration for Matthew and Emma's Plant Wall (see our House Tours). Here is an example of a vertical garden he planted on the Quai Branly Museum in Paris. (Image via Inhabitat)
these vertical gardens make you feel SO ALIVE! they're DREAMY!
How absolutely incredible.
I was inspired by a visit to the Quai Branley museum gardens last year and made my own vertical planter from a section of pvc tubing. I made a number of slots in the tube (which is about 2 feet tall), filled it with soil and then took a leg off of a pair of tights (to keep the soil in), made a slit here and there and planted rockplants in them. The plants are absolutely thriving on my wall, it really livens op my poststamp size balcony...I'm now planning to make a 3 x 3 foot wall planter to put some herbs in. Have seen it done on a UK garden tv show, didn't look too complicated.PS: The rest of the garden at that same museum is wonderful as well, as is the building. And if you're going to Paris do visit it; entree to the garden is free and it's just across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower. Another great garden is the Citroen Garden, also free of charge!
