What a lovely idea! Living Etc. recommends collecting teacups and saucers at thrift stores and garage sales (which you can often get for a $1.00 or less) then labeling them with transfer lettering or metallic marker pens — or skip the labeling if you don't want to deface the cup. The end result: three-dimensional gift tags that'll make beautiful tea-light holders for your guests.

Honestly... I would hate to be the recipient of this. One more piece of junk to have take somewhere... and possibly even to feel guilty for throwing out... It would be another matter if the dish held the gift (like a cake) but this is just not a good idea...
I suppose this would work if you weren't going to jostle the gift, it looks like just one more thing to worry about breaking.
