A big frustration with rental or non-custom kitchens is often the blank wall space above the kitchen cabinets. If you want to make the most of those cabinets (i.e. not replace them) then try this trick: put wallpaper up there! As you can see, this Finnish kitchen has a blue backsplash, but bright yellow patterned wallpaper above the plain white cabinets. Totally transforms the kitchen. A great DIY idea.

There is so much colour in this kitchen but I can see that the rug is pulling the together the colours on the wall so it all kind of works.
