Why should walls have all the fun? Drop ceilings usually aren't the most attractive option but they're often a necessary evil. But Ceilume Smart Ceiling Tiles by Empire West, Inc. are stepping up the adornment factor.
Smart tiles are the mid-priced alternative to uninspired fiberboard and costly tin. Made of vinyl, the panels are lightweight, flexible, stain-resistant, and dust-free. They've even got some green qualities such as low chemical emissions and being recyclable.
Besides having tons of patterns to choose from, there are also five newly unveiled colors, including the Merlot seen here.
We've heard that these tiles work best when the ceiling grid is 100%-completely straight. If the structure is at all warped, the tiles tend to slip out of place.
Does anyone else have experience with these new-fangled contraptions?

I wonder if the ceiling tiles would work on the wall? It might me a nice alternative to wallpaper or wall tiles.
I like the white, geometric vibe since they remind me of sci-fi set decorations (think 70s films like 2001, Alien or Star Trek).
Sure they're great, but I dug around the website and they have to be mounted using a bar grid system, which lowers your ceiling. Plus, in a rental, there's no way I could install a grid.
Hi, I work for Ceilume and noticed your posting. It's always great to see our product showing up in new places on the net! I have some info about our ceiling tiles that might help a bit.
- Using a low profile grid, found at www.ceilinglink.com keeps your ceiling height at a maximum.
- The grid does need to be 100% straight for any ceiling tile to sit in it properly.
- Our new line of glue up/nail up "magnifique" direct mount tiles are perfect for situations where maximum ceiling height is important. They can also be easily mounted on walls for decor, or in kitchens as backsplashes. You can see them here, at www.ceilingsmagnifique.com.
