Want to know how green your electronics are? The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (wow, what a mouthful) or EPEAT can give you a little insight on your current home electronics.
EPEAT ranks electronics based on a set of environmental-friendly criteria and ranks them gold, silver, or bronze. Their focus is mainly on those purchased by institutions, however there are lots of laptop and display ratings to peruse.
HP's laptop was the only product to secure a gold rating. However, manufacturers have to actually do some work to be on this list so it's not completely representative. If you don't see a product, EPEAT suggests that you write to the manufacturer and request that they get certified. According to EPEAT, many manufacturers don't believe consumers are interested in this information. Frankly, we don't agree and like to know what impact our electronics have on the environment. This organization keeps us a little more informed about our purchases.
