As anyone who's ever tried doing some DIY projects at home, you'll know that a lot of the products that you use improving your home—glues, paints, varnishes—can be somewhat toxic. Are there better alternatives? In some cases, definitely. Read on for more after the jump. From staining your wooden floors to painting your interior walls, here are some better, healthier alternatives to your standard DIY supplies:
Osmo Wood Finishes ($80-$150 per gallon): All of Osmo’s wood finish products are made from natural oils and waxes which, when purified and refined, are completely safe for humans, animals and plants. Whether you want to finish your cork floors or stain your deck, you can rest easy knowing that their products are solvent-free, low VOC, LEED compliant, and very durable.
Recycled Paint Supplies: the paint tray, roller tray, drip catcher, paint trim cup, and paint trim tray are all made from 100% recyclable R-PET, which is lightweight, durable, and derived primarily from recycled beverage bottles.
EcoGlue Green Wood Glue ($9.67): a PVA water-based, solvent-free formula that contains less than 1% VOCs and is free of phenol and/or urea formaldehyde resins and isocyanate.
Coccoina Glue Sticks ($6-$9 a tube): non-toxic, non-solvent, and acid free. Plus, they smell of almonds!
Eco-Bond Sealants and Caulks ($6 to $9 a tube): Contains zero VOCs, non-petroleum based, and non-toxic with no/low odor.
