As January comes to a close, we're fairly pleased with how we've stuck to our resolutions so far. We hope we can keep it up, because the extra exercise is starting to show. We even considered joining a gym, but then thought twice, wondering: What's the greenest way to get these workouts done?
Planet Green offers three great tips for going green in the exercise arena. Their first tip?
Stay home. If you don't have a gym within walking or biking distance, the convenience of having a home workout routine is invaluable. We considered signing up for classes here or there, but found Podcasts and online videos that gave us the same information free (saving money and travel time).
Another way to green the workout? Get off the treadmill and enjoy the outdoors. Find any kind of outdoor activity to enjoy—from playing soccer to practicing yoga, exercising outside will give you an even deeper appreciation for the world around you.
And finally, shake it up. Try new things, think outside the box, and break your routine: you may find that some of the greenest exercises blow that elliptical machine out of the water.

I can't stand going to the gym, or really even working out indoors. I hooked my bike up to a magnetic bike trainer, and ride it for half an hour on our patio every other night. I get fresh air, a great view, I can listen to my music as loud as I want, and spit and breathe heavy and be gross, all while being able to hop in my own shower and put on comfy clothes right after without having to drive or walk anywhere. I LOVE it!
I agree with Renai -- I will run on the treadmill at the gym only if outside conditions are dangerous, which essentially means icy, slippery conditions. Even running outside in the rain is preferable to the gym treadmill!
It is key to have the right equipment if you're going to work out outside in winter, though, including warm clothes (gloves are important, sometimes I wear several pairs) and possibly a headlamp and/or reflective clothes, depending on when you run.
