Brush Up on Your "Sweatiquette": 6 Things Your Fitness Instructor Wants You to Know

Helping others reach their fitness goals is one of the most rewarding professions. My years of teaching yoga and barre classes have exposed me to many different students, situations and experiences. There's a lot of planning, practicing and energy that goes into creating and running a class, but the students are the special sauce—and the very best part of the experience.

Aside from sequencing and anatomy tips, there are a few other pieces of sweatiquette that can help you throughout your fitness journey. Read below for a few thoughts that fitness instructors have during class.

Timing is Everything

While teaching fitness classes is a profession, it's also personal for many instructors. We set rules at the gym or studio both for your safety, and for the well-being of other participants. If you're a new student, please come early so we can get you signed up, go over rules, answer your questions, and help you feel prepared. Stay until the end of class for the cool-down or Savasana—leaving early can be distracting to the other participants, and it's also an important part of the class. If you do need to leave early, be sure to let us know beforehand.

We Love Beginners

Trying something new and out of your comfort zone can be intimidating—we've all been there! But did you know your instructors actually appreciate newbies? When you're just starting out in your fitness journey, we're here to guide you. Beginners also help remind us to slow down and go over the basics, which is helpful for everyone.

We May be the Teachers, but You Know Your Body Best

While your instructors have tremendous insight into a specific fitness field, it's you who is the most knowledgeable about what works for your body—and especially what doesn't! While we always want to push you into new territory, it's always okay to say no, and to listen to your body when something doesn't feel right. There's nothing more satisfying to an instructor than seeing you make adjustments and modifications to suit your body's needs.

No One is Judging You

When you're new to class, it's easy to fall into the trap of people-watching—or even worse, thinking that everyone is looking at you. Most likely, each student is so focused on his or her own workout that no one will notice if you're using 5-pound weights instead of 10, or if you omit a Chaturanga or two. As a teacher, we want you to concentrate on how to improve yourself and not worry about what your neighbor is doing.

Have Fun with the Workout

Nothing lights us up like seeing our clients genuinely enjoying themselves. Don't take yourself too seriously, and enjoy the challenges, failures and wobbles!

Progress is so Much More Valuable than Perfection

You inspire us with your determination and tenacity. We're your cheerleaders and coaches, here to help you move toward your fitness goals. While we will definitely celebrate when we see you succeed, what's even more special to us is to see you improve your technique, have fun, and always be open to learning.
