Watching your child grow up is bittersweet; excitement at their new skills and discoveries, accompanied by a twinge of sadness that your baby is growing up. One of these milestones is transitioning their nursery into a "big kid" room: taking down the mobile, moving from crib to bed and perhaps incorporating more of your child's personality and interests into the room. Here are ten "big girl" rooms from 2012 that made this passage with grace and style:
• Sophia's White, Bright & Magically Modern Bedroom
• Tessa Jean's Sassy & Bright Big Girl Room
• Kenzie's Fresh and Fabulous Room
• My Room: Maelle
• Olivia Ellen's Copenhagen Charmer
• Noelle's Crafting Meets Thrifting Room
• Violet's Bright and Airy Space
• Ruby's Gem of a Room
• A "Big Girl" Room Full of Color and Life
• Clare's Big Girl Restyle

Not sure what there is to gain by thematically organizing posts by gender. Why not just "big kid" rooms? I understand that plenty of parents are invested in producing normatively gendered children. Personally, I think it'd be great to see more posts about kids' rooms thematically organized by decor style rather than gender.
^ hahaha, oh god. I'm all for breaking gender stereotypes, but what a ridiculous complaint. If the bedrooms were nauseatingly ''girly'' I could maybe see where your gripe was coming from, but they're not, so it's just empty, really. I am sure apartment therapy will run a post about rooms that belong to boys. Besides, done that way, we get to see double the rooms. Ten belonging to boys and ten belonging to girls instead of one mixed post.
Anyway, #1 is my favorite overall, but Ruby's bed is great. I'd be jumping all over that, too.
And there is nothing to stop someone with a daughter from getting inspiration from a young man's bedroom and vice versa.
^ I see your point. While we're at it, why not also organize house tours by race, sexuality, religion...
Why is it always "girl" posts I see these sort of complaints on?
Greyny, if this was a post on holiday celebrations, for example, it would make sense to organize by religion. Little girls and boys are, for the most part, really into gender-specific style. My daughter is 5, so I think I know a thing or 2 about girls. Pretty much every 5 year old girl I know would love the rooms above. Pretty much every 5 year old boy would hate them. But, when my son is of age to make decorating choices, if he wants a pink bedspread, a pink bedspread is what he shall have.
this post is big girl rooms, as in they are rooms belonging to girls. apartment therapy is not dictating to us that these are strictly for girls. just because boys and girls rooms happen to be divided does not mean we can't take inspiration and do as we please.

In my view, children are socialized into gender norms, in part by parents who frequent sites like AT. The fact that all the 5 year olds you know have already been successfully gendered is pretty remarkable and makes me think we all ought to make a stronger effort to allow children to develop their own aesthetic sensibilities, regardless of sex/gender. In my opinion, a great way to do that would be to avoid using sex/gender as a category to organize posts. It's not that hard really, and in my opinion there is nothing to lose and a lot to gain.
Or maybe we would all think to our selves, "I don't know how to understand this room because I don't know if it's a for a boy or a girl!!!" and then our heads would explode.
There is a 'Big Boys' post for you to now complain over nothing!
No offense to any white people, but you're most likely a white women with very little to complain about and this is what you've chosen to latch onto. I mean, hey, the only one whose made any generalizations about anyone so far is you. Like jenstiles said, 'this post is big girl rooms, as in they are rooms belonging to girls.'
I'm all for wiping out gender role stereotypes. But I'm not going to get behind wiping out genders. These posts are no different to me then getting a kid excited about their "big boy" or big girl" rooms. AT doesn't really categorize rooms by gender. You come here by clicking on a tab that says "Nursery & kids" then you scroll through a bunch of random posts. These posts are just a round up. AT could have kept them together as "Best of Big Kid rooms 2012" but you'd probably still find reason to complain if some of the rooms featured weren't totally gender neutral enough.
