Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin, and their two children recently had their Tribeca penthouse decorated by Roman & Williams; the designers behind the model apartment at 211 Elizabeth Street that we featured in April.
Paltrow's place features a light palette spiked with occasional punches of black and lots of tone-on-tone texture and unique lighting. We like the unusual finds like the sofa swing in the living room, a not-too-kiddie girl's room, diner-inspired kitchen banquette, and graphic wallpapers used throughout. While the feminine style of this apartment is clearly not for everyone, it seems very well-suited to creating a relaxed home environment for high-profile parents perched in the middle of the big city.

White Enamel Flatwa...
I'd like to see photos after they've lived with this color palate a while, particularly the children's rooms.
I suppose the surroundings are calming for very busy people. . . .
Wow, it's extremely...white.
Not really to my liking...
i think its obvious who wears the pants. i can't imagine a man living in that bedroom. Well, ok, maybe that Peter Pan guy in Florida...
They don't actually clean up after their kids, do they? They must pay people to do that for them...or else they wouldn't have chosen this palette. Even apple juice shows up on a white rug and comforter. Oh, please, please, let Moses' next dirty shoe print land smack on mom's bed.
Not feelin' it *at all*. Hard to believe these are the same people behind 211 Elizabeth.
This house looks like a snobby, ice queen lives here. Too bad you can't see her husband or children anywhere in the design.
Anybody remember Ann-Margret's silly white bedroom in the movie Tommy?
http://blog.ounodesign.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tommyannmargretwhiteballchair.png
I like the kitchen...it gives you a feel good feeling. The rest is too white and extreme for me.
Obviously no kids live there!! Completely impractical with young kid... I like professional design but this place lack "soul" and seem impersonal. Eveerything seem calculated for design.. no odd knick-knacks from the owner or personal photograph...
I kind of like it. I don't think I would choose the same features but they work together. Really, the only overtly feminine things in the living room are the couch, rug and lighting - if you replaced those elements it's not particularly feminine. And I love shag area rugs!
The kitchen is really nice, and again, I think it's asexual.
Apple's bedroom though, just seems empty and kind of boring.
i never knew an apartment could feel so pretentious.

Austere comes to mind. Do they actually live here or is this just a crash pad for rich and famous friends who need a bed for 1 night. This apartment comes across as very impersonal. It's just not an attractive place. It's like a twisted and confused shabby chic.
It just feels spectacularly bland & lifeless to me. Beige is not a color I want, even as an accent. Where are the pastels? Even that would be better than beige! The title is very misleading.
Bad.
Deva. Thanks for the link. I think the pics on Gawker give you a better feel. The swinging sofa is to die for....
Haven't we commented on GP's temporary yet gorgeous Texan loft about 2 or 3 times already?
Please, let's move on.
I take that back!
This isn't her Texan loft, this is her real home supposedly, which I've also seen covered by other blogs. Is it trendy to cover GP's living style and habits?
I do wonder though, if no name was attached to this home, would the majority of the commenter still criticize it using words like: snobby, pretentious, austere, and so on?
It's a creamy marshmallow candy pastry hansel and gretel house. Should have been featured in "the kitchn"
"I do wonder though, if no name was attached to this home, would the majority of the commenter still criticize it using words like: snobby, pretentious, austere, and so on?"
If anything, I think that the "attached name" is actually generating more positive feedback than negative.
Personally, I wouldn't use words like "snobby" or "pretentious" or "austere," but I would use words like "bland," "fluffy," and "insubstantial." To me, this just looks like the equivalent of a cardboard stage set.
Why do haters gotta hate? Its pretty and soft and feminine and calming. Maybe they had not moved in yet when the photo shoot was done. Sheesh! I think Apple's bedroom is sweet and whimsical. Who knows what toys are hidden in that closet. Its kind of retro-eclectic-modern-scandenavian. I like it.
It just goes to show that you can have something feel cold and lifeless even if you use top-of-the-line materials. I never knew carrera marble could look so boring. I'm not a hater, sleeping spot, I just need the place to feel like someone lives there. There aren't any books or random tchotchkes that would make it feel like...well..home.
I think what this really does is prove a lot of decorators to be correct-they always claim that you should pull your three favorite items out of your closet to get a feel for what your style is and decorate your home from there. Gwyneth wears a lot of muted colors with clean, classic lines, so this home bears her signature.
I agree with the pretentious comments, and the impracticality (although these two probably have several homes, this one not being the main one). Sorry to say, but there is a very bland and creepy aesthetic going on here - almost like a shadowy, ghostly bad dream. It's so cold and perfect and bland - it's like the female version of the apartment in the movie American Psycho.
It's like a sensory deprivation suite :O
And I think putting a little girl in that bedroom is child cruelty!
It does look snobbish no matter who's it is. Those colors are sooooooooooo bland. BUT I LOVE LOVE LOVE that birds nest bed frame!!! It makes me feel so cozy and happy.
although I love how clean and white everything is, it is also rather too dull for my taste. Great space and very roomie. Heck, they both could afford it! If this is what makes them happy at the end of the day, more power to them. I love, love the nest bed.
Major yawn!
Are these the before or after shots?
This decor style is a humorless, faux-chill but secretly uptight bummer. Reminds me of Tim Robbins' purgatory scenes in 'Human Nature'. Zombie Anthropologie.
Well, in their defense, it looks like they haven't moved in yet and added any personal touches (like art, etc.). Here it looks like a showcase for the designer, rather than anyone's actual home.
I like the kitchen and the girl's bedroom, but the living room seems bland and the overall lack of colour is not my thing.
Calming, beautiful, imaginative....but kid friendly?
On a related note...
"Eh. kimmyles.com"
(I actually think this room is much prettier than the space pictured above, but she makes the same point.)
It's dreamy.
I LOVE THAT BED!!!
I didn't like it at first glance, but after seeing the other photos I believe the space was designed to look terrific at night, with artificial lighting, not by day. Makes sense for a NYC living space.
The unpainted version of that bed has been on my wish list for years.
While the place has been beautifully done, I can feel no warmth or the sense of 'home' from the photos. It very well could be one of those 'you have to be there to believe it' situations.
This looks like a movie set. Beautiful to visit, but not to live here. Lacks warmth and personality just like the over rated actress is.
It's as bland as it's owner.
i like it - serene in the city
This is fantastic. the palette / lighting / space / repetition is perfect.
...I don't get all the negs. Its an apartment design blog. This is a living space with design principles applied. If you are interested in reading about generic pastel homes: http://www.marthastewart.com/
I love the livingroom! The bedroom and kitchen not so much!!!! I find birds to be creepy, so I don't think it would be calming for me to sleep with a nest above me. I absolutely agree the kitchen in bland and mundane.
Can't believe all the hate, it looks fine. Not everyone wants a home covered in splashy bright colors - the white is simple and calm. Looks nice to me.
I'm going to assume that the children live in some closet in the back of the house.
"I believe the space was designed to look terrific at night, with artificial lighting, not by day. Makes sense for a NYC living space."
Is there no daylight in New York?
Ummm I cannot imagine the singer of a famous rock band sleeping in that bed.
Note to self: that's because it's his daughters bed ...
I'l love to sleep in that bed!
Gwyneth posts are like truth serum.
It's like a beautiful corpse, or a bowl of wax fruit. Let's go check out her buddy Mario Batalli's house!
lackluster was my first impression, but at a second glance it's actually quite creepy. It totally looks like a set from a horror movie. Look at that kids bedroom shot! I'm waiting for an axe murderer to come bustin through the closet door. redrum redrum redrum...
I would love to live someplace that was this serene. If I had someone else to clean it. ;)
It's a little too Stanley Kubrick for me, but perhaps it hasn't been lived in yet. It's also the fault of the photos I think.
Anybody know where the bed is from?
Wow. I think this looks like the designers just left and the family has not moved in -- which I'd bet some cash is exactly right! Why would Paltrow offer an inside peek of a brand newly design space AFTER moving in, if the desingers take record photos of their work ahead of time, anyhow. All those personal touches you guys want to see are probably on their way. It's like a blank slate, waiting for photos and favorite clothes and toys and flowers and dishes...
And maybe her husband prefers to let her make design decisions -- some men don't care as long as they get their big screen tv, you know.
Meanwhile, I love that bed a lot!
Love the bed in Apple's room! While the room seems very sparse, I would have looooved to sleep in that bed as a child. Heck, I'd love to sleep in that bed as an adult!
It's way too white...it feels unlived in. Granted she probably has the money to hire a maid to follow her children around to clean up every little mess they make.
all that restraint makes me anxious... that's a victory for the designer, no?
I actually like it. Neutral palletes are nice because you can easily change small things regularly to change to mood of the space. In a neutral space, even small changes can have a big effect.
Primary colors, on the other hand, can be quite fun, but tiring. I'm referring to major elements by the way, like wall colors, cabinets, and major pieces of furniture.
Add a few cushions or throws or bowls or pieces of artwork with a bit of color and Gwenyth's place will come to life.
On another note, the swingin' sofa is cool, but I wouldn't get one if I had kids. If I had one in my childhood home, I can guarantee that any wall within reach would've banged up.
Prewar apts don't really give you the space you need to work an all-white palette. The shag rug and the porch swig sofa are wrong here. I don't like the bed, either. Maybe in another apt with a more dramatic palette, something small and dark. The kitchen is the kicker, though. All that white marble completes the Great Hereafter effect that seems very 80s to me. All the rooms remind me A Dress Boutique In Nolita, a Keith McNally restaurant and A Hotel Lobby. Way too consumerist and cold.
Hmmm, I half expected to see Miss Habersham locked in the closet somewhere in this chilly, old-lady palace. This place is truly awful. I love neutral palettes -- but I've never seen one look this bad! It's definitely creepy and dead-seeming. There's no way those incredible designers were responsible for this bland mess... my guess is Miss Diva likes to play decorator and told them what to do. I guess some designers figure as long as the client pays their bill, what matters? But I certainly wouldn't want my name attached to this.
I like the kitchen, but the rest just feels off to me. oddly for a place with this palette, it seems a little flat--like the light is just dying here.
I like the wallpapers, especially the rest that you can see in that gawker link, and would use them in my own place (if I could afford them) just with very different furnishings and accessories.
For those going on about the bedroom not being masculine enough for her husband, from what I read up there, it seems to be a little girl's room, not the master bedroom.
Which makes sense considering the child-height easel next to the bed.
The swinging sofa and the kitchen are fantastic, but everything else is just plain boring.
It doesn't look lived in, but the design is beautiful.
I just want to point out that the most likely reason this doesn't look lived in is because it probably hasn't been lived in! It has just been decorated, the family probably has a dozen more homes to live in and the designers probably took these photos for their portfolio BEFORE the family moves in to highlight THEIR DESIGNS.
And if Chris Martin is anything like most males I know, he probably doesn't care at all about how the place looks. In fact, most guys I know told me they never ever want to talk about cushions or curtains. lol
too sterile for me....no one could possibly be living there full time, there are no signs of life....are GP and CM still together?
Hideous. Poor Chris Martin, having to a) live here and b)pretend to like it. Or, worse, c) actually liking it. His bland music would suggest he does.
very nice and minimalistic yet warm because its a different take on what most people think of as minimalistic design.
does anyone know where the couch/sofa in the lounge room is from? ie the grey one on the right hand side.
btw, thanks deva for the extra pics.
I like Gwyneth, but that particular room isn't for me, but then again I'm a man.
It feels lifeless and overdesigned to me. Pretty in a way, sure, but what do you do in a room like that? Throw in some personal details like books, toys, comics, games, Xbox, a dog, kids, color (for the love of Jebus, some color), and people in general, and I would like it a lot more.
Then pity the maid, who has to clean it. :)
"Throw in some personal details like books, toys, comics, games, Xbox, a dog, kids, color (for the love of Jebus, some color), and people in general, and I would like it a lot more."
Yes, I'd like to see that as well. But, unfortunately, I don't think it would be an improvement. I have a feeling that these particular rooms weren't meant to withstand personal details. It looks to me like any book, toy, comic, Xbox, etc. would stand in the way of the "design". That's why these pristine, sterile rooms are so silly and impractical. You can't actually live in them! Honestly, one child sitting on that little white swing would throw off the visual balance of the entire room.
I find the easel in Apple's room absolutely insane..who's gonna let a child paint in an all white room. I guess parents that can afford to replace the carpet every few months....
I'm shocked by the negative comments. Perhaps it's not YOUR style, however it is absolutely gorgeous and brilliantly designed nonetheless. Yes, it's very feminine but perhaps Chris simple doesn't have a huge interest in design & gave Gwyneth the go ahead. My husband could care less as long as the price is practical & couches comfortable, ha!
anyway, less tone down the judgement & criticism please.
From what I've read, Gwyneth *does* fancy herself something of a decorator, which could explain things...
(yes, I realize that in these photos, the apartment has been "fluffed", but that the family still hasn't moved in yet)
When I saw the spread on her Hamptons home in some magazine, the influences were painfully obvious -- she was being guided by what she's seen in the UK, and mags such as Living Etc. and UK Elle Deco, but badly. She wasn't able to pull off the complexity of such a look, and it just wound up vapid and rather empty.
Ditto here.
Actually, if you go to the gawker pictures, you will see pictures of the master bedroom. The actual master bed (the one above is Apple's -- it's a tree, haha...) is one of the ugliest beds I have ever seen...
I find the swing in the living room ridiculous and pretentious... I get the feeling that when she came up with the idea, she was trying to recreate a picture of a loft in Barcelona which has a very similar swing (it's been featured in her usual UK design mags) -- only difference is that this is not a loft, and there is no space for a swing like that here... The living room seating, from what we can see in the photos, seems wholly inadequate and impractical.
Criticizing Gwyneth Paltrow for her design choices is fair-game. She has all the money and all the resources possible, and presents herself as some sort of life-style guru and design afficionado (have you checked out her website?!), so it is entirely legitimate and appropriate.
Several have commented on the blandness and the lighting. Remember that these are photos, and that seeing the place in person will likely invoke a different feeling about the place.
About the photography...
It clearly looks like they were going for a moodier look. The digitally added vignetting effect is indicative of this. In addition, scenes with a lot of white can be tough to photograph (or digitally process) for web viewing. It tends to be a compromise between making the image have "punch" and retaining highlight detail. If one were photographing this for print, any professional photographer can find the right balance. However, every computer screen out there is different, and each one will clip the highlights differently. So perhaps the photographer/design firm were playing it safe (in addition to going for the moody artsy look).
This appears to be the same bed but in white:
http://www.stylehive.com/bookmark/mackenziechilds-birds-nest-bed-86891
Emily The Cat, I'm pretty sure there is daylight in New York City. But I've heard it's a great town to stay up all night in.
I use the word 'boring' rarely. I do make exceptions however.
First off, I love the kitchen. I love the clean simplicity. And the bed in the children's room is absolutely gorgeous.
Now, on to the rough comments. Can you honestly say you would be upset if this was your home?!?! Really.
@sliceofchic - Would I be upset if this was my home? Are you kidding????? Let me at it! I'm mentally redecorating already. :)
The model apt. looks much more intesting. This white thing is not so intresting. I guess they still are waiting furniture or personality to be delivered.
"Now, on to the rough comments. Can you honestly say you would be upset if this was your home?!?!"
I would love the space, but there's not a chance I would let it look like that.
Why am I feeling an urge to throw a bucket of red paint on that carpet?
Way too much marble tile in the kitchen. It ends up being cold and impersonal, even though the cabinets are nice enough. The overhanging hood covered in marble cuts the place in half and there are no plates in the slots of the dish rack over the sink--you'd think some staging could have been done to make it look like someone actually lived here. Instead it's just bare, bare, bare. I have more than a few books of modern architecture where that's also true--after the construction team has left the architect sends the photographer in right way, before anyone has moved in or a stager has been brought in to humanize the place. (When did staging in general get a bad rap? There's good staging and bad staging.)
Modern design without these touches just DOESN'T look human, so--yeah. It all kind of lacks humanity, it lacks life.
I would happily move in if someone handed me the keys. I tend to really like color, but this is by no means "horrible" as some are saying. When I was a little girl, that bed would have been my dream!
Yes, I would be upset if my home got decorated this way. Very.
It looks like a bunch of designer showhouse rooms---very, very decorated without any personal touches. And for those who try to explain this away by saying the family hasn't moved in yet---a good designer will know his or her clients well enough to make the design reflect who they are.
As for the sofa swing, I'd be worried about little kids getting bonked in the head by it!
@romateamo
A similar one is available from Anthropologie... for about $5000. Which is better than the $15k cited by that other link! And yet.
(No nest, granted....)
Mashed potato taste to go along with her mashed potato personality. Blech.
Love the living room and the bedroom - absolutely dreamy! But that kitchen would give me an instant migraine every morning (especially since I am up at 5AM). Maybe the lights have dimmers????
give me a break!
I'm so over her.
