Wooden bath mats are pretty to look at and particularly practical for those in humid environments. That said, they can be a bit pricey. This one was created with a few pieces from IKEA and a Dremel tool. The best part is the more you make, the less expensive they are to create. Score!
Outdoor decking from IKEA is perfect for the project because of its plastic backing which keeps wood off the ground, allowing airflow to circulate underneath. Each box was found (on sale) for $20 and has 9 tiles inside. Each mat requires 6 tiles, leaving 3 extras. So buy two boxes and you essentially get a third mat for free!
The process is simple, just un-box and assemble. The plastic attachment pieces on the outer edges are removed with a Dremel tool, though a serrated knife will do the trick if you're not into power tools. This is a great look for inside your home or for an outdoor shower or used poolside. And don't forget to check the Handyman's section at your local IKEA for open boxes that might have a tile or two missing!

my boyfriend was looking to do something like this for the bathroom in his new apartment and i suggested the decking shown above (and he already has a dremmel), but when we went to Ikea a few weeks ago, we couldn't find the decking. he ended up using a shelf from the GORM system that cost about $5. works well... may not hold up as well as the decking tiles, but as a renter, a long-lasting situation isn't really necessary.
I've been about to spend $60 on one - thanks for this timely post.
I did this with similar decking but found that the plastic backing slides a bit too easily on the tiled floor. How have you gotten past that problem?
Honestly, mine doesn't seem to slide much at all. We have a more textured tile though, so maybe that is why?
Hmm....maybe thats it, mine is a smooth marble tile so much easier for it to slide on.
I was thinking about doing that too. Now I have to. :)
