We think the fact that we can hack our iPod into an iPhone is really great, but we always use speaker phone or have to use the earbuds in our ear. This hack is a handy way to really transform your iPod into a handheld phone. You'd be surprised that it won't cost you anything either...just dig out that original packaging.
After you have selected a VoIP App to turn your iPod touch into an iPhone (Skype and Line2 to name a few) you can let the fun begin with this new hack. If you've already turned your iPod touch into a phone you're more than likely always using it on speaker phone, which can obviously have its downfalls. If you kept the original packaging (we always do) or buy new packaging on eBay — listen up!
The inner tray of the packaging needs to be sanded down to eliminate those sharp corners. Next, create two grooves spaced 3/4" from each other in the end of the tray that has a recess for the power button — these are for the earbuds to rest. Then, drill a hole in the center of the tray and only about 1/4" below the earbuds and place a grommet in the hole (to later protect the earbud cord).
Insert the cord into the grommet and position earbuds on top of the case. Make sure it's a snug fit and then continue to wrap the remaining cord around the inside of the packaging until it's tight. Use a cable pin to secure the cable in the bottom corner. When you're ready to use your phone, just plug the headphones into the iPod and you're ready to go!
