The recent crisis in Haiti has left a lot of us feeling helpless. There are lots of sellers over on Etsy doing their part by donating various percentages of their proceeds to Haitian relief efforts. Shop for a cause or make a direct donation to your charity of choice.

Wow, what a great idea! Go, Etsy sellers and buyers!
Why not just donate directly to aid organizations (and get a tax refund in the process)?
Why do we have to buy, buy, buy? I appreciate ETSY sellers, but I don't need more stuff, and buying stuff I don't need isn't going to help Haiti.
(For the record, we've already sent in donations to the Red Cross and UNICEF)
I gotta agree with mchatelaine - I applaud the etsy sellers for good intentions, but if you really want to help, just donate directly. Even one of the $5 or $10 text-to-donate dealies is probably a better way to direct your dollars to the folks who can do the most with them. And if you can afford more, it takes like 2 minutes to do an online donation at www.redcross.org.
I'm not really into this, any more than the person wanting to send a "care package." But then again, I don't like ANY "shop for the cause" crap. Just make a donation to the organization that you feel can use it to deliver aid as efficiently as possible. Like people with access to major medical supplies (and an army of medical volunteers), pallets of MREs, trucks of clean water, heavy lifting equipment etc.
I work for an international humanitarian organization, Concern Worldwide, and we need all the help we can get. Our team was responding within hours of the earthquake.
Concern has a stock of emergency supplies already in Haiti, and another shipment is scheduled to go out early next week. We have 41 years of experience in sudden onset natural disasters as well as emergencies caused by war and civil conflict—we are a leading organization in emergency response and 100% of your donation will go to our Haiti emergency fund.
You can donate at www.concernusa.org
Thank you!
yeah donate to other charities too. i think this is a way people want to raise awareness and help. should people not try to help in their own way?
As one of the sellers above, I just wanted to share that we 100% support anyone donating directly to charity rather than buying a print from us. We certainly don't want people to buy something they don't want/need in place of a straight-up donation.
There are people, however, who would be buying from us anyway so why not add to the potential donation totals?
We are making a personal donation in addition to the money we raise via the shop sales and we are more inclined to shop for gifts from sellers who are raising money as well. Let's do it all!
Another worthwhile organization I recommend for a direct donation is foodforthepoor.org. Of course if you are in the market for cute things at the same time, why not go the Etsy route as well?
Of course you can (and you should!) donate to charity organisations directly. But if you have to/ want to buy something for family or friends or for yourself – why not buy something and help at the same time?
This is just an additional way of raising funds and as such as legitimate as every other donation. As long as processed seriously there is no ranking within charitable donations. Everything helps. No need for such nasty comments!
On Saturday 1/16 a collective shop on Etsy opened solely for the purpose of raising money to rebuild Haiti. 100% of the proceeds (minus fees) go to DoctorsWithoutBorders. Hundreds of Etsy sellers have donated items and most of them ship worldwide for free.
As of 1/19 3:23pm this shop has raised $4992.93 (after fees). Money that probably would not have been collected, if the initiators, their helpers and the donators (all Etsy sellers and buyers) would not work their butts off to make this possible.
I could be nasty too and say, it's much more easier just to give the money (if you have it). But I don't say that because it would be equally stupid.
If you want to help Haiti through this Etsy shop, please have a look at http://www.etsy.com/shop/HeartsforHaiti
Thank you,
Molly
PS: Berkley, I love, love, love your illustrations!!
Update:
As of 1/20 11:47pm, with 689 sales, minus fees, the shop is at $8,505.96!!!!!!!!!!
Anymore questions?
"Why not just donate directly to aid organizations ?"
There are several reasons why someone might choose to donate through a fundraising shop like Hearts for Haiti on Etsy. For example: a person who wants to donate but who doesn't have the money right now.
In the case of Hearts for Haiti on Etsy, instead of cash they could donate a vintage item, a crafting supply, an art print, or countless other types of handmade goods from their Etsy shop directly to the donation shop. The funds, after the item sold, would then go directly to the International group, Doctors Without Borders.
At our house one of us donated an item to Hearts For Haiti on Etsy and is volunteering time, another donated to the Red Cross by text messaging, and another to The Hope For Haiti telethon on TV.
It really doesn't matter how a person donates to charity as long as the help goes to where it's needed.
