When we left home for college, our mother thoughtfully sent us off with one of these for our dorm decor and maintenance needs. And it still sees regular use many years later, even though we have a well-stocked toolbox and far more sophisticated multi-tools (think Leatherman).
The claw hammer handle unscrews to reveal two phillips head and two flat head screwdrivers, in descending sizes. We use the hammer when we're dealing with a delicate surface, and the screw drivers end up coming in handy, since we're usually building something from IKEA or hanging artwork.

My aunt got one for me when I went to college. Best damn gift! I lost or loaned mine away -- glad to know there's someone still making them.

I got one from Restoration Hardware about 4-5 years ago. Not sure if they still carry them. Great little tool to keep in a kitchen drawer.

I got one of these when I went away to college. It was part of a "Get to know your neighbor" kit. Hammer, screwdriver, extension cord, socket wrench (or crescent wrench (it was perfect for taking apart those bunk beds)), thumb tacks, sharpie, pencil, note pad, a small level. All the stuff that people need right away when moving. Put it in the top of your suitcase and when you heard someone shouting "where did I put it?" or "does anyone have...?" you had reason to take a break from your own unpacking.
My first tool I got when I went to college too. I'm 36 and still use it - in fact, I was hanging pictures with it this morning. It's a great sized hammer for small jobs. You're not going to build anything with this, but it beats using the heel of a shoe!

I have had one that is painted all cute for years and use it more than any of the BIG, MANLY tools we have.

Our daughter is leaving for college and I have made a big deal about giving her mine. Big presentation. . . Claiming that if she loses it she will be given away. I was looking to replace mine when I found this site. Of course, I want the girly, cute version!
