The tradition of rug textiles is handmade at its foundation. Artisans are involved in every step of the production process from fiber extraction to weaving or felting the rug. Below the jump you'll find unique rugs by the artists and collectives who weave, dye, felt and design them.
1 The doily rug ($82 for 3ft size) is crocheted by Finnish designer, Johanna Vähätalo, and sold in her Etsy shop Ihanitse.
2 Melina and Dodd Raissnia design and operate their Turkish workshop. Using traditonal felting practices, all designs are made of 100% wool and biodegradable vegetable dyes. The Hextile Rug (4x6, $840) is available as natural or dyed (shown) and comes in a variety of sizes.
3 Recycled T-Shirt Rugs ($60) from Talking Squid on Etsy are made of 100% t-shirt material and sewn onto a canvas base.
4 This hand-cut felt rug ($399) by John from John Pour Homme is available in phrases such as "Home Sweet Home" and "Das Rug."
5 Petal Rug ($2,135) is designed by Aurelie Tu and hand constructed in partnership with the YWCA women's shelter in Portland, Oregon. Tu's rug are all produced using eco-friendly methods of waterjetcutting and diecutting.
