Even in small spaces you need a place to hang clothes that aren't quite ready to hit the laundry basket. Some might have the luxury of a sitting area, others have hooks on their closet doors — but in this bedroom, there's half chairs on the wall. Half chairs on the wall — it's functional art on the cheap — love it!
The idea is simple, cut a chair in half and mount it to the wall with a cleat. It's what we'd all do on a rainy day, right? Probably not, but we're glad someone else did so we have the inspiration to draw from. We can see this look working in an entryway for coats, slim kitchens for aprons or bedrooms (like they've done here).
Make sure you check out the full tutorial over at IKEA Hacker, it's more simple than you probably think it is and can be done in just a few hours. It's a great way to put to use not only IKEA chairs, but thrift store and estate sale finds — it's just so hard to pass up good stray chairs!

Ercol Bar Stool
uh! brilliant.
This is Nobel Peace Prize worthy.
how adorable! Hooks can become a little monotonous, you could even paint a design on them to add a little more flair! www.compartmentlife.com
too cool!
i want to know about the other piece, too. is that a hacked stall?
this is too cool!!!!!!
Hah! That is freaking awesome!
I have this fear that I would just get this project done and my boyfriend would walk PAST it and sling jacket #956484390 over the upholstered slipper chair on the other side of the room and I would kill him with the cordless drill.
...this would allow me to never hang something in the closet again. my apartment would look like a fabric-filled pigsty if i had something like this.
Do NOT like!
Like the idea, but not sure it is the best use of the space.
Love this idea! I can continue to casually sling my clothes over the back of the chair, but somehow this validates it!
That is really cute........... BUT! it will just feed my bad, lazy behavior. In about a week I would not see the chairs. lol
Finally! Something to legitimize my messy habits...
LOVE IT!!!
Sadly, I hate hanging things up in the closet, so it might just enable my bad habits... but I love it anyway!
Items like these are why I love Apartment Therapy -- so clever and practical. Its a clothes hanger, but it amuses me to think that Duchamp and Magritte would have approved.
I can understand the 'wow, cool!' attraction but I think the space could have been used better to offer more storage.
This is truly something I've never seen before! :D I'd still use some conventional shelving to maximize the space . Even just another one of the pictured shelving units and some tension bars between would have worked.
I like this. As someone with too much wall space, and not enough floor because I put my clothes all over it, this is an awesome answer to the problem.
The ultimate thing to enable my lazy clothes piling - I love it!!
I love this idea.
This is brilliant. I've been trying to find shallow bedside tables for our master bedroom that won't block off the drawers under our platform bed. I am definitely doing this.
Ceci n'est pas une chaise. ;-)
(sorry, couldn't resist @treadmill)
I'm so ahead of the times I don't even need to hair my chairs up to use them this way :)
The clothing becomes part of the art, a statement we can all relate to. That's about the only function chairs have in my BRs so it would be perfect. When you can no longer see the chair it's time to do a laundry or put away round up. I like this joke a lot even if it IS for real!
See, I don't really like this. I think it looks like Willy Wonka factory or something.
This really opens up a big question. What does everyone do with "half dirty" clothes? If I throw them in the hamper, and want to re-wear, they are often wrinkled and stinky. But re-hanging is also out, because some venues really call for CLEAN clothes.
What do you guys do? I'm trying a drawer dedicated to half-dirty, with the idea it will get washed at the weekend, but I'm interested to hear from others.
by the way, i love the half chairs, but don't like how messy they'd be in my house, covered with half-dirties.
It elevates random clothing to art. Brilliant!
I like this idea, it's just a fun take an a step beyond hooks. lazy_lurker, my half dirties tend to get hung over the side of the hamper (washing machine safe) or back on hangers and on a hook on my closet door (dry clean or things that wrinkle). The stuff on the hamper will get worn or washed, whichever comes first.
so, so, so smart
Very cool! Love the idea, and you know these chairs are much more sturdy like this then they are as actual chairs...Ikea quality not so good. :)
Hi Lazy_Lurker--this is a good question.
Many of my friends are fans of the "floor-drobe" since like me, they live in old houses without built in closets. In my old fashioned, not large (vertical) wardrobe I don't want anything but clean stuff.
So, the worn-but-not-quite-dirty go on wood hangars and then on wall hooks or door knob.
My collection of vintage wood hangers seems to make them a bit less like mess. . . . (Or at least that's what I tell myself.)
The drawer idea is neater. But I've got limited drawer space and also, to my mind, the idea isn't just to separate them, but air them too. . .
Oops sorry about the typo. Hangers, not hangars. If I had a wood hangar there'd be plenty of space for clothes!
That just looks weird. I agree with the willy wonka comment.
I think it's a fun, contemporary take on a clothes valet!
I never really understood my dad's valet as a child, but now that I have a perpetual stack of clothes at the foot of my bed and hung off a bed post, I completely understand their function.
Witty.
It looks like a stylish psychiatric ward.
Just the perfect bedroom for the guys at Martin Margiela.
Ooh!
I'm still looking for a legitimate clothes horse, but this is still a snazzy idea.
This looks absolutely ridiculous, and not in a good way. Ugh.
Oh yes - my "half dirty" drawer is a mesh ELFA drawer. Liked the Hangar comment!

You can buy things called "hooks" that do the job just as well. Hardware stores carry them.
Ugh. Looks like these would enable sloppiness and collect dust.
Definitely thought these were available at IKEA to buy.... Me doing it myself will not be this nice... xxx
http://reallyliteral.blogspot.com/
This is hideous. It's trying too hard to be "witty" and just looks cheap. Yuck!
Not working for me at all.
Just a bit too precious.
Not for me.
Lazy_lurker, I have that same question! What does everyone do with clothes that are worn (so not to be hung in the closet) but could be worn again (so not thrown in the hamper)?
The half chairs seem to work well in this spare, minimal space, but wouldn't look as good in mine, nor would they even fit. But it is a reasonable solution I'll keep in mind for the future(future bigger apts, that is).
As for my "worn, but not dirty yet" clothes, I have some hooks, and also an over the door row of hooks too (looked long and hard for an affordable one I could tolerate, not a cheapo wire one). I won't re-hang "half-dirtys" in the closet with the clean stuff, and my closet is pretty small. I am thinking of trying to clear a small shelf for them though, to keep stuff off the floor. No room for a chair in my tiny bedroom either.
Oh, and I do have a wicker hamper with a lid, so sometimes the halfway stuff gets folded and set on top of it to await another chance.
If I had a place where I could actually afford to give up some space these would work but in my 700 sq ft apt no way.
