What I Love About My Small Home:
We love the organic modern feel and our art, including a prized secret ceramic glaze recipe from our dear friends at KleinReid. The built-in shelving connects to two distinct living areas -- we especially love the vintage jar collection that we use for our pantry to elegantly extend the tiny kitchen into the dining area while the opposite wall is filled with books and functional items and connects into the living area. For dense city living, we're also lucky to have an incredible view of a brick wall covered in Boston ivy that changes fiery red in the autumn, instead of facing another apartment window or an alley. We love the live "tree-light art" that we wake up to in the morning on the balcony doors, and enjoy our six distinct living spaces all within one rectangular room: dining room, living room, bedroom, kitchen bar and workspace, a cozy reading chair, and a balcony cafe.
Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
We host friends for all-day brunches & dinner parties. The 5'6" x 7'6" kitchen was too tight to accommodate our needs. We added Kalon Studios' Unit 2 shelving with a built-in knife slot to store practical needs including chefs' knives, s&p, cooking condiments, etc., in reaching distance of the stove without using countertop space. We extended the kitchen into the dining area by using shelving as an open pantry with our vintage jar collection. The rest of the dining area is completed by our Paul McCobb dining set that can seat 12. For more seating, both living room side tables are stools, the coffee table is a bench, and we have 2 chairs on the balcony. Three fun challenges: Hiding the ugly air conditioner with a Miranda July art piece which is a functional window shade. Repeat the Unit 2 shelving as a bedside table for laptops, alarm clock, etc. Our friend Simon created the 118" linen panels that hang from the ceilings to softly "edge" the shelving, add texture & color.
If I am the Grand Prize winner of Small Cool, the item(s) or project(s) from my home design wishlist that I'd like to spend my winnings on are:
A wood headboard and more elegant bedding in the bedroom for more texture & color; a bike shelf to hang the road bike on the wall; and a replacement for the arm chair with something more to-scale -- smaller & with open sides. And a few more HUE bulbs!
