It is hard to keep up with all the new design shows but I do have my favorites. I always love watching shows that catches someone off guard and surprises them with a home makeover. HGTV'd shocks homeowners by showing up in their big red truck and brining along an HGTV designer. You never know if the truck is going to come to your city next or which designer will be making over your space.

Every episode features a different designer with a completely different style. Last week Antonio Ballatore designed a family's basement space that was inspired by the their vintage 1968 Ford Galaxy. This week's episode features luxury interior designer Sandra Espinet. She is known for designing over the top spaces in Mexico, so she was the perfect fit for a family looking to transform their bonus room into a Mexican cantina-inspired lounge. Can't wait to see some of her ideas for the space.
What are your thoughts on HGTV'd?

Shaw's Original Fir...
I haven't seen the show. Who pays for what in an episode? How much control does the household have in what is done? In shows similar to this one, it seems the homeowners participate despite aggravation and disappointing results just to be on TV, which is sad.
We watch it, and it's been pretty interesting (except we can't STAND the host, who is unfortunately also the new host of the Next Design Star).
I don't think the homeowners pay for anything. There isn't much control, though, besides the homeowners stating what their hopes and preferences are for the space. After that -- they get what they get. If you have a terrible space to begin with, though, you might at least get new floors and paint!
ahhh, if only i bothered to pay for cable, then I'd see all these cool shows too.
I haven't seen the show yet since we ditched cable a few months ago, but it sounds like just another makeover show where the homeowners will end up with a "themed" room or some other tacky design done with fast & shotty craftsmanship. I could be wrong (and I hope I am) but it just seems like that's the norm for so many shows like this.
Yes something about Tanika (the host) irritates me. It's like she is trying too hard & she comes off fake. She should go back to tabloid entertainment show she came from.
I've watched a couple episodes. What bothers me is they show most of the finished room at the opening credits. Then I'm like, why bother watching now!
I love the idea that they brine the host. Makes for tender turkey at holiday dinners; what does it do for the host?
HGTV'd is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!! LOVE that show! My other favorite show was The Ultimate Crash, on DIY Network! We were on DIY Network's House Crashers and it was absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!! And that was just the "house" portion! I couldn't imagine having the whole SHEBANG! Can't wait for more episodes!!!
What I would really like to see is a show hosted by Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan putting the information in his books and apartmenttherapy site to work. I would gladly volunteer to have him come and help me de-clutter and arrange the furniture. I would like to see programs with more step by step features with practical advice. For example, have one episode just on furniture arrangement. Take several examples and show and explain why. Explain in more detail the "bowling alley" and "movie theater" concepts. Another could be on storage solutions. I loved the bits he did on that show I can't remember the name of. That, I believe, could be expanded to make his own show!
That show was Mission: Organization, one of my favorites. I certainly would pay to get my cable back for a show with Maxwell as host, but he's super busy doing other things. Meanwhile, I get the kind of information you mentioned from books. The public library is a great deal that you're already paying for through your or your landlord's property taxes, so why not use it?
Yeah, I don't know anyone who likes Tanika. I love HGTV but am not into this show. Too flashy, over the top.
Candice Olson and Sarah Richardson are the only designers worth watching, in my opinion.
I've looked closely at the paint jobs and cabinetry work on those other shows... and it's pretty shoddy.
They're aiming for a flashy "after" shot: swooping around... set to techno music... and once all those TV lights and camera crews are gone, I'll bet 9 our of 10 homeowners are disappointed.
I like Tanika, so that's 1!
I adore Tanika Ray. So that's 2. She's a well needed respite from the uptight designers usually populating HGTV. I see you, Candice Olsen.
I find it scary. You turn over your home and let them do whatever they want. Did you see the episode with the undulating wall of wine made out of wood? Yikes! What an eye sore. And it took up the entire living room!! I would only let the Sarah/Tommy team from Sarah 101 near my place.
Personally I LOVED the recently aired "HGTV Special: The Mix" with Canada's design sweetheart Samantha Pynn.
Thoroughly enjoyed this divine decorating uno-episode, esp her visit with the fantabulous Thom Felicia! HGTV Canada: more please!
I second the suggestion of Maxwell on HGTV! GREAT idea!
I like to occasionally watch HGTV'd, although not regularly. But no way I'd allow them in my house! I want what *I* want, and I think I have decent taste and design skills, so not turning control over to anybody else!
Now, I WOULD let Ahmed do my yard! (He does listen to the homeowner's basic desires before he ramps them up, so I'd trust him more.)
Pickled designers, anyone?
HGTV is constantly doing things like painting exterior brickwork, which ruins it. Most of these flashy shows don't care about the historic features of a house and what their designs will to to the fabric of a house in the long term. HGTV'd is no exception, especially with that awful wine wall that GreatFriend mentioned. It added way too much weight to an original floor and will probably cause long term damage. Use some serious caution before doing anything permanent to your house even if you saw it on HGTV.
I haven't seen the show yet. Although I must say, I'm getting pretty sick of "makeovers" whether they're people or houses.
