What I Love About My Small Home:
Our home took us a while to find but it was worth the wait. It's in a fantastic vibrant neighbourhood, and is about 100 years old - a rarity in our young city - which gives it oodles of character. It has great bones that have made it a joy to decorate and live in. It's got high ceilings (high enough to include a shallow storage loft in our bedroom!) and it's well laid out so that it doesn't feel cramped - it's perfectly petite. My favourite feature is the walkthrough bookshelf wall that we built in, which works overtime as storage and an architectural feature. The ongoing decorating process has been a labour of love for both of us, and we couldn't be happier with the home that we've created.
Three of My Best Tips and Tricks for Creating a Successful Small Space::
-Don't be afraid to go big. People tried to talk us out of the bookshelf wall because they thought it would overwhelm the small space, but it draws attention to our high ceilings and is the focal point of the room.
Be honest with yourself about what you need relative to the space you have. We originally had a piano in the living room that took up way too much space and never got played because I was mindful of not disturbing our neighbours. We ended up loaning it to a friend until we eventually move to somewhere with space for it.
-Keep it clean! A little clutter can quickly overwhelm a small space. Optimized storage space is the small home's best friend.
