- What I Love About My Small Home:
- For me this is my first non-share, non-studio home...so 515 sq ft is HUGE for me. I love that I can work, live and entertain comfortably. Working from home can be a challenge, but my teeny atelier can easily be converted from work space to dinner party ready in a few minutes.
And my pocket sky line view never ceases to make me happy!
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- One challenge was staying within a strict $1000 budget. Moving from a 200 sq ft studio to a larger space required substantially more furniture. There was a lot of trial and error, but I managed to buy, trade and find all my furniture (minus my bed!), and stay within my budget with money to spare.
Also, living in a new construction building is a whole new experience. No moldings, no beautiful old architecture to do the work for me. So to create a space that feels lived-in, I blended my love for mid-century with rusty, old and rickety to create a home that feels just right.

Whoa! This is beautiful! Nice work.
I love that green chair in the living room. So cozy, yet elegant.
One of my favourite spaces so far. So much personality! I love those beautiful antique chairs with the modern dining table.
Beautiful! Love that mirror behind the bed!
Very nicely done! I'm in love with the green chair and the black and white storage.
Brilliant job on blending in that lamp shade and rolling file into the wall. Love the floor to ceiling windows in the bedroom. Your view reminds me of the studio apts. in San Francisco.
You've done a really nice job.
Don't care for the piece hanging over the rolling file. Is this a real skelton or something you made?
I live in a 1,088 sqft loft and somehow I don't have room for an egg chair or dining room table... Major kudos to Heather for making her place so beautiful and functional!
I am in love with your dining situation! ! Cannot believe you managed all those great pieces, and for less than $1000! Great Job!
Small in space, HUGE in style and sophistication. Great job!
LOVE the mirror-turned-headboard!! great idea on putting it there...and such a find w/ those gorgeous detailed edges!
Love it Love it Love it !
Fabulous and frugal!
Two things I absolutely loved...1) the black and white striped column and how you blended it in with your rolling file/cubby cabinet and 2) how you softened the new construction look. I really almost didn't realize this wasn't a pre-war apartment. Really liked the Brooklyn panel art...where did you find it? Do you think they'd have the Bronx? :)
Definitely a favorite for me.
Your space is the most creative and uniquely styled I've seen on here! The utilization of unique objects for decor as well as function is fantastic. You better win this!!! :))
I love your egg chair and your suitcases!! If you ever get bored of them, please send them over!! :-)
Your space is beautiful! It's one of my favorites so far. I LOVE the suitcases in your bedroom. You make living in a small space look elegant and easy. I'm also impressed that you set a budget and were able to stay within that budget with money to spare. Job very well done!
Very pretty, you have done an outstanding job!
Not my style at all but --- WOW!!!!! Beautiful!!
Good work!
Is it an original Egg by Arne Jacobsen?
Love the striped wall and if you ever want to get rid of the green egg chair call me!
Love the bedroom with the pretty mirror, windows and lovely stack of suitcases.
Having a door to the bedroom is priceless! We are in a 575 sq. ft. unit on the 25th floor of a highrise in Streeterville, Chicago -- without a bedroom door. I've had to remedy the situation with a curtain wall a la Carrie Bradshaw's apt in SATC but how I miss an actual door (and wall). Great space, love your use of colors!
Love this apartment!
Amazing. Love it!
ALL that furniture (minus the bed) for under $1,000?! I'd love your list of resources. While it seems you must be an artist with some connections, that's mighty impressive (even IF the beautiful chairs are knockoffs). Very lovely and fun! Congrats.
Love the Egg Chair paired with the Chinese influenced ottoman. The green & yellow combo is smashing!
…book piles make for cozy.
Traditional chandelier paired with the modern elements below always adds interest. And love the chalkboard wall utilized as a work space for mood boards creating ever evolving art- how clever!
The black walls in bedroom with mirror combined create a beautiful contract giving attention to the curvilinear lines. The over extending side lamps is a nice pop of drama.
i know im weird but the book stacks are my favorite part!
Love all the elements in your bedroom, including the fantastic windows and view. Can you share where the blanket/throw on the bed is from? I have been looking for something like that.
This is great. I'm not usually an egg chair person, but the green is awesome, and that blanket is tops, too.
Hi All! This is Heather, and my goodness...thank you so much for lovely comments!
@LYONSTILL- The skull is real. It was a gift but it was from an animal that died of natural causes, not someone's dinner. The bone did creep me out a bit, so I painted it.
@FYREBYRD2- The paneled art is actually a old floor screen, that I stripped and painted with a design I originally planned for a tattoo. Much, much better on a screen:)
@ ASDISPAULS- The egg chair I believe is a repro, it has no markings, unfortunately.
@ DUSTY3863- The blanket is vintage, from a company called Raymond Meghdoot.
Thank you, so much-again!
Totally agree with @very artsmart. Best of show - a clear winner in my book and I've seen some great stuff over the past few weeks. My favorites are the living room with stacks of books and pattern blends and that wonderful, wonderful bedroom. It looks so light and airy because of color use, oversized mirror and windows. Oh, and on a budget of $1000? Absolutely amazing!
Between the Egg chair and the Eames lounger in the bedroom, there is NO way this was furnished for less than $1000. Those chairs alone go for at least that much each, repro or not.
Striped wall is so clever!
I LOVE this apartment!!! Soooooo beautiful and welcoming and looks soooo comfortable all at the same time. I wish I had the skills you have to create such a gorgeous home. CONGRATS!!!
Oh wow, you have got serious style!! You did this on a tight budget?! It's incredible.
Perfect - this is so inspirational. Rarely have I seen a place with such a great combination of style, loveliness, warmth and personality.
Im so motivated! A true inspiration for fellow New Yorkers, a small space done well!
wow
I've lingered over these pictures and am more impressed every time I look.
All of this love for the Egg chair and nary a mention of the couch? It's wonderful!
Love the rugs- and LOVE the bedroom. You've done such an amazing job-kudos!
you have mastered the art of the vertical!
Absolutely GORGEOUS! Quick question: I'm looking for a grey paint color that is very similar to the one you used in the room with the green egg chair. Do you happen to recall who manufactured that paint, and the name of the color? Once again, fabulous job!
Gorgeous. You have wonderful style.
I love your bedroom and the mix of masculine and feminine touches! What is the paint color that you used for the bedroom walls? thanks
Simply gorgeous! Love your place!
Hi, wonderful Apartment Therapy readers! It's Heather again, I am completely over the moon with all the thoughtful comments. Thanks so much.
@ DC MANDY: YES, WAY! The Egg chair was purchased for $100 from Craigslist after being reduced a number of times...it was day-glo Dee-lite bright green. I've wanted one since I was a kid, so a hideous color was not going to stop me! It is heresy, but...I painted it w/textile paints. The Plycraft lounger/ottoman was $30. I'm a seriously frugal shopper.
@MOM2THEMONK- The livingroom wall paint is Benjamin Moore's Aura-Winters Gate in satin finish. Gorgeous color...appears a warm blush greige in the morning to an almost olive green at night.
@ MELANIEACH- I originally hoped for Farrow and Ball Hague Blue, but after the minor stroke I had after realizing that it was $120 gal, I hand tinted BM Tuscon Teal paint with red, black and ochre Mixol universal tints. If I ever had to match it again, I would be in trouble.
Thanks y'all!
Absolutely love your style....beautiful.
is that just the wall with the continued stripe or a cabinet..I think I see handles...if it's a cabinet where did you get?
I absolutely LOVE this. So sleek and charming! You certainly have an eye for fashion!
wow, all that space to yourself in new york...curious what work you do at home. Are you an artist? I'm seriously impressed, when I lived in New York I didn't even have a bed. My priorities were: rent/ metro card/ dance classes. I'm so happy to see people making wonderful homes in such a wonderful city good luck heather!
looks fabulous!! hope you win!!
Beautiful. I love the striped wall. It looks textured, though; I'm curious if that's just how it looks in the pictures, or a deliberate painting technique, or something inherent to the wall. Also love that you incorporated the lampshade!
You seem to have a some tree branch arrangement in your living room window, yes? Or a mobile? Something's going on in that corner.
I deeply love your bedroom. In addition to the obvious things to love, those pillowcases are perfect.
So surprised to find questions after the competition is over!
@GGSAYS: The striped cabinet is actually a laminate built-in, great storage...but quite a bear to figure out how to stripe w/out actually painting it (I'm a renter!)
@VEREROO: The wall is a paint wash, I thought solid black would be too busy in the space, so it reads as texture instead oh heavy black stripes. The branch sort of bit in the corner is a 9 1/2 ft tall pencil cactus, unfortunately sun glare washed out its alien plant splendor. Thank you, I love those pillowcases too! Strange vintage Chinese embroidered birds, adds a bit of feminine frivolity...and only .99 for the pair!
Thanks Apartment Therapy, I will be back next year! Early!
