Heavy Lifting: How Did You Move The Big Stuff?

Pin it button big

I've moved nine times in my adult life, and while I've done my fair share of hauling and heavy lifting, thus far I've only done apartment-style moves: minimal furniture, no appliances. As we face moving our refrigerators, washer/dryer, and large couches into the new house, I wonder if it's too late to befriend bodybuilders...

How have you all done it? Did you hire movers? Recruit burly friends? Make new, burlier friends and recruit them? Simply power through? Fortunately, my partner is brawny as all get-out, but despite my best weight-lifting efforts, my arms remain more Olive Oyle than would be ideal. As much as I'm looking forward to running stairs and hoisting boxes and generally reminding myself why I work out, I fear I will be useless when it comes to moving a refrigerator up a flight of stairs.

So what to do? If you've ever moved an entire house worth of heavy goods, how did you get the job done? I'm going to devote the next month to making friends with the powerlifters at the gym and figuring out what kind of protein shakes to bribe them with...
