We posted about Dull and Mattias’ remarkable renovation before but with the help of our Swedish friend Mats, we have learned a bit more from the article...
Helena and Mattias' transformed their two room house in Gothenburg, into a five room house (The Swedish do not include the kitchen and bathrooms when they count rooms). By utilizing the attic space and redesigning the layout they have opened up so many possibilities. Space and lots of white give their house such an airy feel.

They designed the windows to allow breezes to flow though the entire house. The article goes no to mention that their cats are doing great on their open stairways but there are railings on order for the humans.

what a gorgeous space! though necessary, pity that it needs handrails
Ooooh Look...
...another duplicate post!
stairs without handrails freak me out, but I'm afraid of heights.
Wasn't this posted yesterday (or some time recently)?
Yes, yes, yes, your children will plummet off the edge, and that's a cute cat.
Definitely hand rails. Especially when you are just coming out of sleep and are not too steady with a bit of wine or such. For Pete's sake a slip or a miss step and you are on your derrière tout de suite.
i've slipped on stairs and fallen perhaps twice in my adult life; both times there were handrails which made no difference. i still landed on my butt and tumbled.
handrails are great for the elderly with a failing sense of balance, medium sized insecure children, and people with genuine medical needs. they aren't much use for toddlers or pets as they're too high and neither can't so much as walk and chew gum at the same time, let alone walk and/or grab. most of us don't use them that often. go to a public stairway and watch.
i'm all for caution, but all these posts about building codes and falling seems like too much fear to me. you've brought fear (a very ugly, if occasionally useful thing) into your homes. i can't imagine living behind a six or eight foot fence, with a brinks like security system, and shutters and blinds to keep my floors and furniture safe from sun damage.
i can imagine the joy i'd feel in this space, even if i had to be a little mindful (heaven forbid) while climbing or descending stairs. exorcise that third grade catholic nun teacher, the overbearing parent/relative, or the crabby neighbor who told you your yard was a mess; live a little.
I beg to disagree regarding the handrails. I life in a loft like apartment and post a couple of kids, it is I who is in constant need of the handrails. Holding items (not just kids) up and down, wine, lack of sleep all factors - one does need the handrails. I am fairly well coordinated and have tumbled on more that one occasion.
Forget the handrails (I agree that they're a necessary evil) - what's that beautiful finish on the walls in that bottom picture? Plaster/fresco? Not a faux finish, surely -
The stairs make me a little weak in the knees. I definitely vote for handrails.
Where is their dining table from? I love the shape of the legs..
The space is beautiful!
