Ideas for Decorating Bare Wall Around TV?

Good Questions

Q: We have lived with this very bare brown wall for about three years now. We love the cocoa colorbut the lack of any decor bores me. My husband kind of likes the blank space. He is a comic artist and doesn't like buying any framed "art," as nothing ever suits his eye. I had a photo we took of a green cactus blown up , but it didn't look right in this space:

I am stuck on where to start. The picture on the left can go... it was really just something thrown up in an effort to get started, but I am not in love with it. Would love something that would help take the eye away from the TV. We also have another similar bookshelf (one shelf higher) that could go on the other side of the media center, but I think that may be too much furniture on one side of the room. I would love a way to hide the TV antennae but haven't found any foolproof options that would work for us.

Apartment Therapy — can you help me decorate this space? Bonus points for less expensive options, since we are looking to move within the next few years.
