Q: I live in a condo that is long and narrow with light from sliding doors at one end, and a small kitchen window at the other end. It doesn't have any windows on the sides because I share walls with the condos on either side of me. How can I lighten up my space? I feel like I live in a cave.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Paint the walls a lighter color! It doesn't have to be white, it could be light gray, or even lilac. Add some light flooring as well. If you have hard wood, get a light colored area rug, even if it's carpet, area rugs can be placed over it. Put a large-ish mirror on the wall and get some new lamps. But one thing I've really found helpful is making sure there's not a lot of furniture in the room. For instance, having a large couch, loveseat, 2 chairs and a coffee table may make the room seem more dark or cramped. Unless of course they are spread wide apart and have plenty of room around them.
Mirrors!
I have the same exact situation! I will closing on a smallish 775 sqft condo next month. The first thing I'm doing is paint and lighting because I think this will make the biggest difference. I also keep reading about reflective surfaces and illusions.
In the living room area I am going to try a large mirror, window-pane mirror, or multiple mirrors. I would love to do a smaller version the 3rd photo here: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/high-impact-dec-140771
For the windowless kitchen, I think I am going to update the under-cabinet lighting & add a silver/steel subway tile backsplash for a good light reflection. I also may try lighting over the cabinets... I can't wait to hear other suggestions!
I have the exact same issue- but with no window in the kitchen. I used a lot of white furniture and bedding, along with a lot of silver accents. I chose to block the window as little as possible with tall furniture (I live in a bachelor with a bed by the window but I have no "room divider" so that light can pour through. I also installed lots of lighting.
I agree with using mirrors throughout to help reflect the light. it doesnt work with my layout (its weirdly choppy) but it can really help if done well
The best thing you can do is try and keep the windows clean and try not to block their light!!
Use cream polished tiles or polished flooring, if you can change your furniture get ones with legs rather than bulky sofas & chairs. Don't turn it into a hall of mirrors, make one end of the room a chill out space or moody dinning space where light is not necessary an advantage, have defined spaces within the room.
