We'd like to buy some time to save the $$ to do a full remodel, so right now I'm looking for some help figuring out some low-budget, creative updates to make now. Painting the vanity would be an easy fix, but what to do about all the tile? Self-adhesive vinyl plank flooring to cover the ugly tile floor? Paint? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I think the tile would be a lot more tolerable if you painted or changed out the vanity. Any way to removed that commercial looking soap dispenser on the wall?
I think if you really want to embrace the pink you have to work with it, not fight it. While I like the idea of putting up the letters on your wall, it seems like they are competing with the pink.
I also agree with Terry that the tile is not as bad as the vanity. That may be a much easier fix than replacing all that tile.
great shower curtain, works really well with the tile. I personally would buy a (thrifted) not-too-expensive chest of drawers and convert it to a vanity. Paint it a buff color and put some mod stencils on it to pick up the theme of the curtain. I would ditch the paint color, the letters (or paint them) and the mirror (replace with something smaller, centered, and able to contain clutter)
From the photos, the tile appears to be in great shape (and very clean, too!). I agree to change out the vanity- if you choose a simple white one, like a pedestal, they aren't too expensive. You will lose storage, but it will look lots, lots better. Just be sure to choose one you love so you won't be replacing it again in a few years when you totally remodel.
For a cheaper fix, just put down a white bath mat. Buy 2 so you can have them in rotation. It's amazing what a new bath mat can do!
BTW, great shower curtain!
I dunno, I kinda like everything. I feel like the wall color is totally and completely wrong, however. Also, have you thought about painting the trim on the vanity white, swapping out the hardware on the doors, and perhaps even changing the faucet on the sink?
What's your goal in all of this? Will you someday be ripping everything out and starting over, or are you going to be living with this bathroom for a while?
I don't think you can get away from the pink until you're ready to replace the floor. And I wouldn't recommend trying to do self-adhesive tiles over ceramic in a room where there's a lot of moisture. So, until you can get rid of it, work with it.
Your current problem is that you're trying to accessorize around that wood trim on the vanity, and you're adding another color (turquoise) to compete with the pink. The easiest fix would be to paint the vanity white with black trim (paint the part that is wood now black) and black hardware. Either paint the walls white or paint them a color that matches the pink in the wall tiles (not a great color, but white walls might be too much white). Then accessorize in all black and white.
Pink, white and black is a classic bathroom palette, and I think it will look a lot crisper and fresher.
I'm not sure it would work with the wood tones in the vanity, but we painted our 60's era pink bathroom walls chocolate brown and added some dark green plants - made a huge difference.
You can minimize the look of the tile with a bath mat. My bathroom looks to be about the same size and layout as yours and I had tile that didn't match the style of the rest of the room. I covered most of the tile that with one IKEA Toftbo bathmat. It's held up for about 7 years so far and washes up well in the machine.

The cheapest and easist fix here is definitely to embrace the pink (which by the way, I personally LOVE!).
If this was my bathroom and I was going to spend minimal amounts i'd do the following:
1. Change the paint colour - the same bright white as the tile and woodwork, or if you're feeling brave- the same pink in the wall tile.
2. Paint the dark wood on the sink surround bright white, and change the handles to somthing chrome.
Love the shower curtain, works really well with the pink, and I like the letters - buit think there are too many colours going on. Could you paint them all a simlar turquoise to the shower curtain?
This should bring it all together quite well. Once the tiles are part of the scheme i'd be surprised if you still hated them as much.
Good luck!
tinted goggles like in emerald city. just pretend it's another color.
Love the shower curtain! I would paint the walls pink to match the tiles, and get a white bath mat. Worry about the rest when you have the money - unless you have the funds to replace that vanity now, in that case I agree a pedestal would look so much better. If not, I wouldn't waste my time painting a vanity you plan to get rid of... I think you've chosen the perfect shower curtain to pull it together (as well as could be expected!).
I really like the tiles, though, and would keep them and get rid of the vanity when you can.
I think there are too many colors going on and would focus on pink and white with aqua and silver accents. I would paint the wall a light pink and the edges of the vanity white. I would replace the cabinet handles on the vanity and the garbage can with something silvery. Maybe aqua towels? The shower curtain is perfect.
I think the bathroom only needs a few changes. I like the shower curtain.
Please paint the vanity one color. I think the brown tone of the trim would be the best and would make the unit appear to be new and fresh. I used a Rustoleum paint on laminate shelves in my mother's bathroom and they look like new.
Paint the walls the same soft pink as the tile to expand the space.
Take down everything on the light switch wall.
Put a dark stained woven basket on the top of the toilet and put down a dark faux sisal style rug to co-ordinate with the cabinet.
You just need an hour trip to IKEA and move on with your life. Really.
I put in a new GASP! pink bathroom.
I did not use this paper but it was my second choice. It is vinyl coated and a better choice for you. The color is more of a taupe than what you see here. It is a large scale but not overwhelming print. Gorgeous with pink.

Shand Kydd has some really nice stuff in a vinyl coated wallpaper. Lowes carries some of them but not all.

Paint the trim on the vanity a white to match the white in the wallpaper and find a coordinating shower curtain.
No need to replace the vanity. Keep the colors within a certain tonal range. If you jump from a bold strong color to a pale color it chops up the room and makes it look smaller and busy like yours.
Use bold color in a teeny tiny accent.
My bathroom is silver taupe and pink.
I have a nice fluffy cream rug on the floor. Yummy.
Lose the vanity. You can get a simple white vanity for $50 at home depot.

Paint the wood trim on the mirror white and add white accessories. Although I like the shower curtain I would lose it and go for simple white then go bold on the wall color, red perhaps with white accents?
I have to agree with the black-and-white deco people. Either paint the walls black, or a black/white pattern, and paint the trim on the vanity black or white. Or you could paint the walls crisp white and have all black accessories: bath mat, shower curtain, towels. I think the letters are too many colors. I love the light fixture though. Dark navy in place of black could work as well.
Or, go grey with the walls and accessories (cool grey, not taupe!). Personally this color scheme reminds me of Angelina Ballerina, but that might be just me. I'd add some metallic silver to the grey too, in the shower curtain or chrome/silver picture frames on the wall.
And be thankful you don't have the Pepto-pink vinyl tub/shower unit, pink ceramic toilet and pink sink that could have accompanied this bathroom. What you have could be totally pretty!
I would definitely trade out the G for a J... GTL baby!!!
Sorry for the Jersey Shore reference... :)
I had the same UGLY faux pink tiles all over my walls when I moved into my house! I was so glad to chisel them all off the wall! I would take out the mirror, add a vanity, take out the sink, put in a pedistal sink for more space and then the tiles! I went with slate in my bathroom and halfway up the walls. If you dont want to do the floor, take out the wall tiles when you take the mirror down and put others up or just leave the wall.
To me the worst part in this bathroom is the floor. I've used peel and stick tiles, and they're super super easy to lay, but I don't know if they'll work unless the floor beneath is relatively smooth, i.e. no grooves. I'd say paint them.
Your bathroom wouldn't be so bad without the Fisher-Price letters and ghastly shower curtain.
Accessorize with all white towels, bathmat, and hotel-style white nylon shower & silver & white bath accessories and your place will be instantly more mature and timeless.
why not try covering the vanity with contact paper or mod pod and decorative paper?
this would be a very inexpensive way to hide the pink. add some inexpensive chrome pulls and paint the wood trim white.
i would also paint the walls white.
your shower curtain is great and should be the inspiration.
I have similar bathrooms and will save this post. Would you please share photos of your after when you can?
You can actually paint the tile. Look for an online tutorial. Also, my friends moved into a house where pink tile covered every bathroom and the entire kitchen. They turned them pink to white with an acid resurfacing process. They hired a professional team to do the work, the tile looks brand new, and this allowed them some time to save before redesigning the kitchen.
The idea is to tone down the pink. I would go with white, a classic:
1. by changing the shower curtain for a transparent one, the white tiles will make up for 1/3 of the space
2. painting the walls white will cover another 1/3 of the space
3. painting the vanity and trim in white will cover about 1/8 of the space
4. changing the hardware to silver will reflect the light and match light fixture and faucets
5. Keep the mirror - to enlarge the space and reflect all the white
Follow advice from bepsf and go for silver & white accessories.
With more white, eyes will be drawn upward and the floor tiles will be less noticeable.
Good luck!
Paint the walls dark gray / almost black.
If you're saving for a full renovation, I would spend ZERO time and money on interim fixes.
Take the advice of bepsf and you'll have a much more live-able space for now. Save your money, and scratch your remodeling itch by collecting tear sheets and doing research for the Big Remodel.
Pink bathroom are a pain in the butt. Mine is a similar one... :(
I like the letters AND the shower curtain. Look into epoxy paint for the floor tile. I don't mind the wall tile, but it would work on that, too. I think it might be a really good solution for you. Also, you can sand down that vanity and paint it. I know it probably seems strange for that material, but I've seen successes with it and I think it would make a huge difference. Change out the hardware on the vanity, you got a new bathroom. I'm gonna guess it would cost around $90 for the total project.

To me it seems the brown lines around the vanity make it worst looking then actually is. Otherwise that tone of the pink is quite well.
Given that chaining the tiles would be the hard and expensive work and the door being white, I'd:
1- lift the color scheme towards pink/white by simply changing (or painting if you can) the vanity into white
2- changing the shower curtain with a half transparent or white one.
Eventually you can enjoy adding a 3rd color of your choice.
oh yeah, you should get rid of those letters in there :)
1. Get rid of soap dispenser.
2. Get rid of shower curtain (I see a nice spa like waffle curtain).
3. Remove contents from the lid of the toilet bowl (Mouthwash, ew!).
4. Letters--out.
5. Don't fake tile the floor; if you can't do a real reno, buy a nice floor mat for the sink area (white).
6. New, updated faucet.
7. Paint cabinets (esp. the trim).
8. New cabinet pulls.
I had a pink bathroom and still have a pink tub. Other fixtures are white. I painted the walls a very pale, almost white, pink and added white wall tiles, an all white sink cabinet, white enamel towel racks from Ikea, and a new, white tile floor. I have light pink fluffy towels in there and a glass shelf with some sea shells, marine sponges, and coral and some antique pictures of wetlands flora. Also I added a very bright 48" flourescent ceiling fixture and two other lights, and there is also skylight to bring in lots of light from outdoors. There is only a small, round retractable face mirror near the wall light -- no big mirror. I like it now.
Pink wall tile: fine.
Pink floor tiles: not great.
Pink vanity: vile
one out of three ain't bad. Lose two.
something weird is happening with the typing... I'll go now.
paint the vanity that greyish color.
I empathize with you - I'm also frustrated with my bathroom (at least your toilet and sink are white!) Your bathroom is really not that bad. The wall tiles are fine and the cheapest way to cover the floor ones would be a bath mat. There are some good quality, easy to launder ones that could serve you well until your remodel. I like your shower curtain and love aqua and pink together. If this were my bathroom, I'd simply paint the vanity trim white, change its hardware to chrome and paint the walls the same aqua as your shower curtain but at half or quarter strength (very, very pale). For the light fixture wall, I agree with the suggestions of removing the soap dispenser and replacing the letters with "art". Ikea might have boxes or bins to hide daily essentials on the toilet lid - stuff is within reach but room looks sleeker with it concealed. I'd also try to find a white wastebasket to make it "disappear" into its surroundings (toilet and wall).
Good luck! Plenty of good, inexpensive, ideas here to help you on your way. Hope we get "after" pics.
I actually think the wall tile is charming. Soft and pretty. The floor is unfortunate, but the vanity is absolutely tragic. As is, I'm sorry to say, the shower curtain.
Honestly, I see nothing in this bathroom that warrants a complete re-do, but I love sweet old-fashioned bathrooms. The wall tile looks to be in terrific shape. I'd cancel the major reno, put down a black and white basketweave tile floor or the nemo glossy black/white:

and replace the vanity with a white pedestal sink. White shower curtain, white towels, some black & white deco accents. Lovely.
HELLO FELLOW PINK BATHROOMIAN! We have one, too, not to mention a kitchen with avocado cabinets. At first I hated and was embaressed by them both, now I realize I'm the only one who loves them! We also have an ugly vanity in the bathroom, too. Anyway, for the bathroom, we found just an awesome yellow wall color to liven up the room and I dream of owning a fabulous anthropology over-the-top shower curtain. You have to go with it if you can't fix it right away (someday it will be gutted)! We have a pink and white floral bathmat that brings the attention off the wall and to the floor. We went with a "vintage" style on the wall art. Perhaps by doing this we have made it a bit more purposeful as opposed to something we can't change...I think that mentally is helping us through every pink morning... ;-)
May I suggest purchasing a small dresser at a second hand shop, painting it white, gutting the drawers and securing just the drawer "faces", cutting a hole in the top to fit the sink? It'll give you a little more space. You can get the cutest vintagy knobs for it at Anthropologie.com for about $6 apiece.
...and painting the wall-space white would open up the room more and not clash with the pink and turquoise...A white round mirror would give it a nice contrast to the shapes in the room. And the shower curtain is so fun!! I love the print, Urban outfitters? The only thing I must say has to go is the lettering. Since it is obviously sentimental, I would suggest trading the letters in for small white ones, the're only about $2 each at Walmart. Your bathroom is charming, I't's not as bad as it seems, I'm sure, to you. :)
