Q: Hello! I just recently purchased a 250 sq ft studio in NYC to be used as a pied a terre. I wish to have it painted before I move in. The boring and practical me would paint it white, but I want to break out of that so I am seeking your help on choosing the colors.
The photos shown are from the sale listing, so the furniture there is not mine, but the colors of the walls are accurate. (I currently only have the Ikea Lycksele sofa bed with a navy blue cover as furniture.) Thank you in advance!

I think we need a little more info, such as: floorplan with window placement, size of windows and exposure (ie. east, west..?); what will be your primary activity there (crash pad only? bring back a date? working during the day?); what sort of "feel" would you like and what styles appeal to you.
We could throw out a color (blue!), but that would be kind of meaningless without more context.
yellow....the color of liquid sunshine. it will still be light and bright and warm and happy.
So you don't want it white but you don't like the color that is currently on the walls? I think it's really nice. If you don't like it, I suggest something that reminds you of home. Find your favorite element at your primary residence and pick a color from that.
Judging purely by the photos you have provided, I'm gonna go down the suggestion path as the previous commenter said and say a fairly light, smokey, silvery, blue-grey.
Pick up a few house and design magazines and cut out all the pictures and images you like. Arrange the cut outs on a table and you'll probably find a similar theme in what you are chosing, which will help you chose a colour and a look you love. We did that for our kitchen and found that dark wood counters, stainless steel and while cupboards featured over and over again.
It if was me I would put wall paper on the long wall with the table (at present). With such a small place, you probably don't want a strong colour everywhere and I'm a bit tired of painted 'feature walls'. But it's not my apartment!
Green walls in the city is a happy color! Like having houseplants that you don't have to be around to water.
I agree with HOME BODY, green would be a great colour. It's also effectively a neutral (all colour flowers look good on a green plant).
I second the yellow comment. You're likely to come into the apt tired from your journey to get there, and the yellow will be both invigorating and sunny... making you want to go out and do things.
OMG, how wide is that bathroom? Like something out of the film "Brazil."
I'd do a mirrored wall so the place looks like it could pass for 500 sq/ft.
I'm with amyfaith up there at the top. More info! And I'm not much help with color suggestions. I'd paint it white. Gallery white, if you will, and let my stuff be the color. You are NYC! Visit stores and restaurants with great design and find your inspiration there. During a particularly boring business lunch, my mind drifted and I thought, "This wall color would look great in my studio."
I'd cover the walls in a medium to dark grey grasscloth and let the space revel in its cocoon-ness. Maybe a splash of pale pink on the ceilings.
I love the gray color in the kitchen! But if you want to bring in some more color, I'd recommend a subtle light turquoise, blue-green, or mint green color. Maybe one of those colors in each room. If you want something more dramatic, try a navy or super grass green. For something with some more personality you could do stripes or a pattern in the kitchen on the open wall or all the way around.
NOt everyone loves yellow.
I have no idea why but it makes me cringe to have yellow walls.
I'm living with them right now (can't paint) and am looking forward to my upcoming move into a mostly white place.
The part that's not white is natural wood and I couldn't be happier.
Gray and green have a soothing effect for me, especially green as it brings the outdoors in for me and everything looks natural against it.
That's just me.

I like the cool grey it is right now. If I had to change colors I would change it to a light light warm beige. A strong color will make you dizzy!
When I think pied a terre I think vacation property, fun, luxurious, a little risky since you don't have to live with it all the time. How about one wall papered or painted in a jewel tone?
If there is a good source of natural light, I think a really saturated, bright color, like a fuschia, could look really great in there.
You don't have to paint, just add color with some artwork/wall hangings.
Okay, I'll risk looking stupid. What exactly is a Pied a Terre?
sorry-unrelated question, but where is your table/dining set from?
In a space that tiny I would do an accent wall (it appears you have one blank wall) in a strong wallpaper (my preference would be almost anything from Osbourne and Little, but perhaps one of the many birch-grove papers out there) and paint the rest a coordinating color. Then furnish as sparsely as possible. Be really careful with your lighting.
I say live in it awhile, then decide.
@xtina A pied-à-terre is a secondary or temporary home. It sounds like this one is a crash pad in the city for this person.
@afor The table/dining set are not hers.... these are photos from the selling listing.
I'm with @LondonClaire .... Make a "storyboard" folder or pintrest board to see what color combos *YOU* are drawn to.
You want the apartment to feel like your own space, so avoid white/taupe/camel/greige, which all say "model home." You want it to feel like more than 250 square feet, so avoid dark/rich/deep colors like burgundy/navy/hunter green. That steers us toward pastels. To avoid a possible playhouse/dollhouse effect, go for a sophisticated muted pastel with plenty of gray in it, so that you'll get personality, restfulness, and openness. I'd suggest something in the celadon area, like Benjamin Moore's Key Largo Green or Behr's Rockwood Jade.
Some colors suck all the light and life out of a room, and some make it glow.
If we suggest some specific products that we've loved in the past, perhaps that would be helpful.
My favorite is Behr's Delicious Melon - a light cantaloupe color that is very flattering.
How about sea glass colors? Keep white trim, paint really pale celadon green, aqua, blue, maybe lilac on different walls (one or two, not all of these colors). Brighter versions and/or orange, fuchsia, melon, or other brights for accents. Leave the cabinets white but add colored glass knobs.
can I just say that I would happily live in that apartment all the time? also, I vote to keep the color the walls are right now, and put in some bright rugs/bright furniture.
The current color on the walls make me all warm and fuzzy and reminds me of my childhood ^_^ But the wrong lighting coz ruin any good or productive mood. Go for bold!
The place looks great. Don't touch it until you feel inspired by something.
Although the best time to paint is when an apartment is empty, it's also the worst time to decide. Paint is almost the last thing you should decide on unless you want super-duper neutral, or have a strong frontrunner for favorite color.
Hire a designer. I'd have fun doing a 250 sq ft pied a terre! A GREAT place to take some risk!
Wait, you just got a place in the city?
Is that you, Pete Campbell?
I'd recommend a gun rack, a home ECT kit, and a lotta hats. Plus a lotta icepacks, for when you get socked in the face.
I love the clean, white look you have right now. Just add lots of colorful pillows, rug and accessories.
Ok, though it only matters what colors YOU like, I'll bite. Black and white tile bath looks good with yellow walls...but you have to change out that hideous light fixture in there, and replace the mirror on the back wall with one that runs from the tile to the ceiling, to give the room a bit of impression of more space, and a simple plain white or yellow shower curtain, and get rid of the vanity and put in a pedestal or wall-mounted sink to give you some floorspace...really.
I also don't like the grey and would paint. I have a yellow living room that is really tannish, but also yellow, depends on the light, which looks great in different lights...think it was a restoration hardware color, so look at theirs. Agree you need to stay away from dark colors (make rooms smaller), grey, tan, beige, greige (boring), and pastels (yuck). That leaves sophisticated colors in neither light pastel nor dark hues - something with some color, but in between dark and pastel. Not sure my yellow would go with your floor colors well - are you planning to use a big rug or leave the floor mostly bare? - you need consider only the color of your floor at this point in choosing. Skip blues - nice for bedroom, not for living room. Ditto greens, for me, anyway. Go with a different color in the kitchen - a reddish, coral, orangish, maybe a green or turquoise - if the walls are such that you can do the kitchen a different color. Have fun choosing! It may be easier to choose if you get a rug first, and choose a color from the rug.
Live there a while. Observe the light. Start clipping rooms you like in magazines, looking for commonalities--maybe not the literal wall colors in rooms you like, but moods. Since you have almost no furniture it's not that big a deal to paint later. Or maybe when you make a couple of purchases one of them will inspire your color scheme...
