Q: I've been working on redecorating and updating my parents' furnished basement, but this awkward wall in the bathroom is leaving me stumped. It looks like a mock garage door complete with the upper windows (into the laundry room, not outside unfortunately) and the recessed squares. Any ideas on how to make this eyesore something we can enjoy?

Sprout Side Table
I actually think the garage wall is pretty cool. I guess you could hang some kind of drapery up near the top to cover the windows though.
Have you considered filling in the top glass panels with the same material as the rest of the wall (drywall vs wood vs composite) and painting the entire wall white? The wood paneling on the ceiling makes the room look dark. Perhaps you could paint it white as well?
I'm generally not a fan of white-out but if it's a basement room without any true windows, best to maximize what light you do have with a light color and a satin or eggshell sheen.
Just a thought...
I think it's actually pretty as well! It isn't that different from wainscoting. I would, however, paint it all white-- I think that would allow it to be more "wall," and less "odd art installation." All white would be a little country home, and very pretty!
I agree with painting it all one color, and the ceiling. Matching towel bars (all the same height), TP holder etc. would be nice too.
I think it's kinda cool. I would paint it the same color you are painting the rest of the room, but for the windows, you could use frosted contact paper and cut out a design to cover them.
It's very good looking and architectural. Have you considered replacing the raised panels with mirror? Not sure what mirrors would be reflecting from your room?(Oh..maybe too much toilet?) Old worn mirror woule be more obscured or a faux foxed mirror paint technique? In the alternative, I'd paint the entire wall a single exciting color, glass and all. Good luck!
I like it too! Go all white and I think it's great.
Paint the ceiling and wall to get rid of the constructed from leftovers look. Simplify the fixtures. I usually hate skirts on sinks but in this case I wouldn't. Where is the door that the doorstop is for?
Paint it all one colour to minimize the look of the recessed panels. If you don't want to go with white, I would go for a blue on the walls which would pick up the grey from the floor and make the nice wood ceiling a feature. It looks like the floor and ceiling are on the orange-yellow-brown side of the colour wheel and because the toilet and sink are creamy go toward a grayer blue.
That Beautifully paneled wall is an eyesore?
You should be forced to live in a trailer.
Worry more about the light switch conduit.
If the windows bother you, they don't bother me but I can't see through them, then put curtains on the laundry room side of the windows.
I like the wall. The person who built this room appears to have used a tactic I used in my own basement utility room. The wall is made or recycled doors.
Paint it all one color (match your trim or your wall color) and purchase applied-texture panels for the windows. I would install a vertically stacked towel bar or towel "ladder" to break up the sameness from one section to the next, rather than 2 separate bars side-by-side as you have now.
I like the wall. I'd change the sink. Are the walls a sage color, or are they white and just shadowed?
I think just painting the entire wall one color would help a lot. If it's the paneling you don't like, it'll smooth out the edges, while maintaining some visual interest. After painting it, I'd probably look for three perfectly sized frames for the artwork/print/etc of your choice to place in the middle of the paneling above the towel racks.
Or-- wait? Is one of those panels a door? I think I see a doorstopper...?
I really like the wood ceiling and though I'm rarely in the "Omgwtfbbq don't paint the wood!!1" contingent, I'd really love to see the wood ceiling stay in its current unpainted handsomeness. It has kind of a delightful boat cabin feel with the wood ceiling. ^_^
A teak (etc.) shelf running the length of the wall just under the windows would be pretty and functional. Create a couple of sparse vignettes with pottery and folded turkish towels.
Oh-- and putting a rug in there would probably go a long way towards warming the space up, even if it is a basement bathroom.
it looks to me like it was made out of repurpoused antique doors. Painting it all one color, adding shelves (I'd do two, just under the window and level with the shelf over the sink) so it can be used for decorative storage, and getting towel bars that look like they really BELONG will make a huge difference! I wouldn't worry about blocking the windows- if there is natural light that gets in from the laundry room, it could be a great place to grow certain tropical plants.
If I were you I would paint the doors/wall all one color. And go with the whole salvage look. Use pipe for towel bars, hit a salvage place and look for funky items to decorate. Vintage signs, metal pool baskets for towels etc. It's a basement bathroom, not your main powder room. Let it be different and casual.
Put me in the camp that likes it. Cover the windows with those stickers that make them look frosted, then put some bright lights in the laundry room to shine through the windows. It would create a very cool look and would open up the room visually.
Wow! My husband would think this is so cool. Anything garage related inside the home is cool to him. :)
I suggest putting stained glass or some kind of frosted glass in place of the existing windows.
Paint the entire door/wall white and then maybe paint a thin "pinstripe" (more garage chic!) around the edges of some of the recessed squares - possibly complimenting a color in the stained glass, or use a silver paint to play off the hardware in the room.
I think a lot of us would kill for a little architectural interest in our homes such as this. Embrace it!
I'd go with an interesting but not too dark color in a satin finish. I like it.
Sorry, I agree with alot of the other comments...I like the wall. I immediately thought that the black squares were maybe painted with chalkboard paint. So, if not that would be a fun suggestion. Then you can use chalk to dress it up. Also..putting a valance over the windows might make it more "pretty" and give you more privacy in the bathroom. Good luck!
that is cool as hell.
i would recommend finding a book of like photos/prints, framing them all in white or black frames, and place one in each panel.
you can't change it so go with it and really accentuate it.
Wow, it's interesting, first I'd paint out the dark rectangles white. I suggest putting something interesting in those glass panels (family photos or a single landscape photo enlarged and then divided among all 6 panes as though there's a 'view', wallpaper, even gift or scrapbook paper, fabric) and use those towel/grab bars to hang modern or antique quilts which will add visual interest and help minimize some of the visual weight of that wall.
My best friend used to have a Piet Mondrian bathroom, it would be funky but possible here.
this is cool..i would paint it all out in white though and remove the towel bars. Instead mount a double hook under each set of windows to hang towels if necessary. I wouldn't mess with the windows...they are quirky for sure. It looks like a fresh coat of white paint over everything (ceiling, walls, etc) would brighten it up and update all acessories (toilet paper holder, mirror, lighting, etc) It looks like a very unique space though with great potential!
Good luck!
Definitely agree, paint all one color. You could also embrace the whole recycled door motif by adding vintage door knobs, house numbers, and placing a "welcome" mat as a bathroom rug in front of the sink.
I like it. Just paint the panels all the same color, like others have said. Leave the glass alone.
Curtain valance at the top covering only the windows, lose the hardware entirely, and embrace the checkered madness. I kinda like it, actually.
mccavity, I'd LOVE to have seen your friend's bathroom. Mondrian was the first thing I thought of when I saw this. In fact with the panels, you could do 'little Mondrians' inside of one BIG Mondrian!
I like it, but paint all one colour as suggested - maybe a watery blue. How about then frosting the "windows" - that way they would have more of a "window to the outside" feel to them. Update your fixtures - maybe a free-standing TP roll holder. Can't tell if the light needs updating or not.
If you don't like the idea of having the panels all one color, you could wallpaper the center part of each. Or you could apply fabric. I believe there's a way to put fabric on with starch so it adheres to the surface. You could add a cute little gathered skirt to the sink in a matching fabric. Add a throw rug for color and texture.
