Q: Help Me. Please. I am moving into my first apartment by myself in just a few weeks. For the past 6 years, I have shared places with sisters and friends and it was always a mishmash of both of our stuff…
I am renting a newly renovated apartment - new floors, new paint, cabinets, appliances, everything(!) and don't want my lack of decorating skills to keep this place from shining. One of MANY questions I have is this:
I have an amazing dark purple couch that I plan to use in my family room and I just built from repurposed wood pallets a coffee table I put on casters that I am staining (turned out awesome!). What color combo would you suggest for curtains and a rug? I'm at a total loss here. My first go to would be gray but my bedroom already has that color palette. As for my personal style - I don't really have one! I am a very laid back, jeans and flannel kind of girl. It's amazing at what a hard time I am having with this decorating nonsense!

Ercol Bar Stool
Why not a grassy green color? I have a couch and rug that color, with dark purple pillows.
I don't think there's anything wrong with having a similar color palette in both rooms, but if you want to shake it up, just get a bunch of paint chips in deep dark shades of other colors - blues, greens, pinks, and tape them up by where the curtains and rug would go. Once you've decided on a color combo you like, start looking! You don't have to do both in the same color, could still go gray for one. If you make sure all the colors are in the same intensity/saturation, anything could work, really.
Also, is the stain for the table dark? And what's the wall color? Go dark with everything else if you want it moody, or lighten up the other stuff if you want more cheerful.
I'm assuming you're adventurous (purple couch) so why not go all out with some contrasting yellow or gold and some complimentary blue. You can always bring the colors together with fabric on a throw pillow or perhaps paint yourself a canvas with the said colors to tie it together. I've painted rough circles on a canvas to bring things together and it turned out fabulous. Good luck!
Sesame from Benjamin Moore is a great yellow-green-beigey neutral that really makes a lovely backdrop for purple.
Oh, meant to say raw neutral linen for curtains, as long as possible. Linen works with everything, you will love them for years.
Kathryn - I am so inspired by the idea of the repurposed pallet coffee table, but I wouldn't know the first thing about how to do it. Would you mind sharing?
