Q: I'm designing my bedroom around this photo but I can't find a low-profile upholstered headboard anywhere. Every one I see is far too tall, even on custom sites. And while we're at it -- any clue about how to find a mirror that large? Help!

gorgeous photo.
all i can say about the headboard is DIY, DIY, DIY.
it wouldn't be difficult, even for the un-handiest of people, to get the measurements, head to a supply store to have it cut to size, purchase the fabric you love and upholster it yourself.
as far as the mirror...unless you're absolutely smitten with the large singular mirror, you could set up 2 separate mirrors side by side to cover the wall space.
If all you're looking for is the headboard and not a bed you could probably DIY something pretty easily.

^ For the headboard. I made one, and it is perfeeeect. You can customize the height to your needs, of course, by choosing the proper size canvas stretcher and hanging it at the preferred height.
DIY for sure.
Daniel over at Manhattan-Nest has a great post about making his bed starting with an Ikea frame: http://manhattan-nest.com/2010/07/23/a-whole-mess-of-staples/
Picture frame (by the foot at a discount place) and mirror glass. As long as you're careful about weights and how you hang it.
I'm going to start working on my bedroom in the near future. I never thought about a low headboard. I really like the look of this. Thanks for the post & the picture!
I have to agree with the sentiments above. Both projects are great candidates for DIY. For the mirror, you can attach big bathroom mirror to the wall and make the frame around it from wooden crown moulding. Usually, the grain of the wood doesn't run in the direction of the grain in your photo. If that's a problem, rather than just staining the moulding, you can do a dry brush paint treatment.
Headboard... where is the headboard? Just kidding this is a DIY project, so easy. I did a headboard last year using an off the shelf hollow door I got at Home Depot. 28 inches wide. I put foam, batting, muslin and fabric and hung it on the wall using "Wall Buddies". It can be hung at any height. You can get the mirror at any glass shop cut to size. Again off to home depot to find picture frame moulding to use around the mirror. If you hang the mirror from the wall i would suggest you go to a custom picture framer to ask about proper hardware and technique to hang the mirror from the wall. It will be heavy! Good Luck and have fun!
How about buying an Ikea MALM bed and upholstering the headboard? Couldn't be easier.
I occasionally see mirrors that big at Home Goods.
What headboard?
How do you know you want it if you can't see it?
Yeah what headboard? Are we talking about the mirror that's hung above the bed? or that teeny tiny taupe rectangle that may or may not just be a pillow?
Am I the only one who find mirrors over the bed a bit 80s kinky?...
These kinds of headboards are often wall mounted and can be hung at any height desired. http://www.amazon.com/Skyline-Furniture-Surrey-Shantung-Upholstered-Headboard/dp/B002EEO1T6

Sorry. Link didn't take. You will have to cut and paste...
check out Tate bed by Crate and Barrel, not sure of the exact height you need but it seems appropriate, besides I adore it and its very reasonable!
Room & Board's Wyatt Bed is pretty close... http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=3626&catalog=filter&menuCatalog=room&menuCategory=191&menuSubcategory=135
Not sure who the bed is by, but the design is Ron Marvin (http://www.ronmarvin.com). You could try contacting him (??)
What I want is the cloak of invisibility that the photographer used when taking the picture. Seriously, where's the camera in the reflection?
