Q: My husband and I CAN'T agree on a new couch. Attached are pictures of his ideal couch (after the jump) and mine (above), which do not intersect, apparently. He wants something traditional and very comfortable (apparently he leans on the arms while sitting) while I just want something clean-looking that does not in any way resemble a catcher's mitt or bean bag chair.
He also hates the buttons on tufted pieces. And too firm of cushions. I'd like to not lose the remote. Does there exist a couch with clean lines and comfy arms, no buttons and a happy medium of stuffing? If so, where can I find it? What does it look like? Can it be had for under $800?

Shaw's Original Fir...
My husband likes those same type couches! And I HATE them! I would say since you both like leather, you just need to go out and look at some and decide on one you both like. Maybe if he can sit on and try one you like, he will see it is more comfortable than he thinks it is? Even if you have to go looking at a high end place, then you can decide on a style and then look for cheaper alternatives.
Maybe rethink the assumption that you need one large couch. A trim Dania sofa paired with a big comfy leather chair, for example... Mix and match, think creatively.
That second sofa is grounds for divorce.
Just ask my ex.
On the other hand, the first one doesn't look very comfortable. I'm sure you can find a better option together.
I'd agree that the 2nd couch is a No, IMHO. Could your sweet husband compromise -- Ikea has leather sofas for just over your price range http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S69876003/
-- clean lines (some tufting). It can be challenging to find good quality and design that you both love!
good luck!
I definitely think you can find an in-between option. I'm sure his is comfy but sooo ugly and yours is very elegant but does not look comfy. Ikea's Karlstad leather sofa might be a good option. I've sat on it and it's very comfortable. It has the lower arms for him, a little tufting for you.
This is the sofa we chose after a very similar argument. My husband is still pulling for an overstuffed recliner ... blech.
Anyway, we've had it for three years and it's held up really well. We still get tons of compliments from people saying "I never knew leather could be so stylish!" and so on. The arms aren't stuffed, but they're comfortable to rest your elbow on. If your husband needs more stuffing than that, get him a throw pillow!
Let me add that spending a couple of hundred bucks over your budget is far preferable to getting a compromise sofa that neither of you really likes.
Why don't you meet him in the middle with something like this: http://talkinterior.com/images/uploads/Modern-Sectional-Leather-Sofa-Furniture-Set-for-Living-Room-5.jpg
I thought I would never liked these big leather couches, but went to a house last week that had too and it looked beautiful. Use pillows, throws and other room accents to soften the look.
Good luck!
Well, personally I'd never ever get anything with rolled arms. It takes up to much real estate, it looks dated tradtional.
Please consider straight lines. It's just better.
I am with your husband on this one, "your" sofa looks like it should be a law firms office. Many are, furthermore they are not comfortable to sit on. Surely the "idea" of a seat is not just the "look" but is comfortable to sit on.
Unless you get a lucky Craigslist break, I would stay away from $800 leather sofas. They are not going to be good quality leather and you are better off going with a textile. Cheap leather furniture will crack and after awhile it behaves like it has been laminated or bonded even if it is real leather.
However, on a bigger budget you will find that Restoration Hardware has options that are a perfect middle ground for your two tastes!!
