Q: Can anyone direct me to a source for a dining table similar to this? My boyfriend and I love it but we can't seem to find anything similar thats also affordable. We've considered constructing our own, but finding the wood base has also proved to be a challenge. Maybe the readers can share a source for an affordable table or affordable resources to DIY this piece? Please help!

www.treetables.com ... but pricey
This is not a dining table, it's a side table, but it looks really similar:

We have it in our house & love it!
Here's a wine barrel stand: http://www.ewoodart.com/?page=barrel-head-tables
I saw them in person at a winery and we all loved how they looked. You could buy just the stand and buy a glass top.
For a DIY: why not check with a local tree removal service to see if you can purchase something from them? Or a sawmill.
You will have to do your research though....it could take a very long time for the tree trunk/stump to dry thoroughly for use inside.
Maybe post an ad in your local craigslist asking if somebody is removing a large stump that you could have? Or perhaps contact a stump removal service to see if you could arrange to get one? (then you could just saw it to make it flat)
Looks like a conference table to me. My guess is that it is made of reclaimed logs or it is man made. Either way, it sure is beautiful!
Not to be a debbie downer, but I once contacted a tree removal service in LA and they said they couldn't sell stumps. Asking someone who's having one removed may be okay, though. The services wouldn't sell them, though, because of the liability. :p
It IS a beautiful table!
If you're going to DIY - AP had a great article for finding re-claimed wood in and around your area:

what do you think of this one?

If you live in the Boston area - contact tree removal services on the North Shore - Beverly, Ipswich, Rowley, Newbury, and Newburyport. Last Thursday we had a freak storm with 80 to 90 mph winds and there are 100's of huge old trees down on both sides of the road all the way up Route 1A. I've been wishing I had a place for some big wood chunks in my house, because they are there for the taking.
My parents had a custom dining table made by Gary Weeks out of an old giant mesquite stump that had rotted out in the center, thus creating two halves to balance a large glass table top. You can check out Gary Weeks work here:

But my guess is that to make your table it might be a bit pricey since it's custom.
Bah !!!
Here's a DIY for the exact pic:
Office furniture / Walmart /etc.. have the exact thing - made of laminates, metal, or other cheap parts.
Buy a round base of any material of your choice; veneer it with high quality (real) wood veneer. Veneers have come a long way. Here's one, of good quality. There are better ones out there if you search:

Here's another DIY idea ( a different look ):
Buy a circular base of your choice. Buy birch logs. Nail / glue the logs lengthwise to the base. VIOLA !!!!!
Works with bamboo; any kind of awesome wood. Or awesome veneer on pine.
You can do a 180 and make any kind of modern table
Use wallpaper instead of veneer on circular base

Where do you live? If you're anywhere near VA...
reclaimed lumber resources can find you pieces like this easily if you just call them or instead just Google large wood slabs in the wood of your choice ie walnut, maple... then purchase a glass top from a glass or mirror company (might be the most expensive part) of high quality and set it on top with rubber bumpers so it will prevent movement and scratching.
I have been on the hunt for something similar as well. I had a custom size oval top made from the leftover caesarstone from my countertop and have been looking for a pedestal base. I actually tried the teepee base from CB2 as noted above but sadly it cracked under the weight ( the top is about 150 lbs)...so needless to say, I need something very sturdy and stable ( I have 3 young children). I actually have an ash tree which we had taken down in the yard with very large stump pieces, but I am not sure how to go about having it made ( or if it will be stable enough without being too wide to sit around comfortably?) Also, it is incredibly heavy...how would you move a stump of that size? Any ideas on how to create this or other bases would be much appreciated....
where is this original picture from?

meyerwells.com can custom make a table but it's going to be expensive.
