Q: Hi folks! I need some advice on this decorating dilemma at a small town house in Brazil. The living room is narrow (it's an open plan living room and kitchen) and I don't have a full wall where I can hang some artwork. My couch is a dark brown (I would prefer a grey one, but couldn't find one that I can afford).

Anyway, now I have a boring living room with no artwork, a brown rug, a brownish silk shaggy rug and no style! I am using a grey curtain that I had before, but I am also looking to change it:

We also have this empty space under the stairs, so any ideas would be very much appreciated.
I love Scandinavian style and also organic and creative spaces, but I am lost on how to make my living room look decorated! The lounge unfortunately does not fit right in front of the TV. There are two doors, as you can see: one is the front door and the other one is a small restroom.

Commercial Flour Sa...
Ive seen gallery walls around TVs, or even under your stairs would work. have you tried that?. I dont know if there is space or not, but is it possible to turn your couch to face the TV? Then you could put a sofa table behind it to display sculptures and plants and things like that
Filling that whole wall with art/photos would be fun, bring a lot of contained color into the room, and made the TV less obvious. Under the stairs you could either continue the shelf space on down and fill it up with books and baskets of pantry items (I assume your kitchen is right there), display stuff, and the baby's toys (in baskets at the bottom). Or you could do a long, shallow sort of table with drawers at the edges and use it as a computer work space. Browsing through IKEA hacks should help with how to do that at lowish cost. A console table under the window that's behind the sofa would be a good spot for plants and drinks that will be out of the baby's path of destruction.
It's a cool space it'll just take some experimentation to figure out how to work it.
Unfortunatelly the lounge doesn´t fit in front of the tv... It would be much nicer!
But I like the idea of having this tv wall as a gallery...
This suggestion doesn't address your artwork dilemma, but I love your shelves beneath the stairs. They remind me of some built-in storage solutions I've seen that maximizes that unique space.
Would you consider a built-in console or buffet under the stairs?

Little one might enjoy a little built in playhouse under the stairs in a few months. In the evening you can tuck any manner of toys out of sight easily if the play house looks like a closet (with shutters?) from the outside.
Maybe forego the couch and just use comfy chairs in groups. Or trade the living and dining rooms, continue the shelves under the stairs. Or use back of couch like a partition to separate the kitchen, the use a tall sofa table as a dining bar with stools under.
Maybe put the couch under the stairs, and the tv on a low stand under the window the couch is at? The couch and the rug arent bad at all,and I love that dining table. Its a cute place!
Here is some food thought depending on budget and desire.
Assuming the kitchen is next to the dining room, I would keep DR table where it is. If possible, I would extend the ceiling light fixture to hang over the table. I agree with recommendation to put (white) long sideboard under stairs for storage, bar area and art work on the piece as well as the wall above; maybe move the LOVE sign there. Some plants on the shelves would also add some nice color.
In the LR, I would recommend painting the back wall and doors black, as well as the underside of the stairs. I think this would be very sculptural and Scandinavian, and hide the TV. With your light tile floors, I think you can get away with a dark wall. Any chance the sofa is sectional? If yes, separate + move them in the space. If not, think you need one other cool seating. Also, if possible, I would trade out the curtains for something more sheer.
Hope that's helpful.
If there is no way to watch Tv from the sofa, why not move the TV? Aside from the practical reason for doing so (you can't see it), it also makes the corner more of a problem. The door is one height, the window a different height, and the TV a third. None of them relate. I can't tell if there is another door - at yet another height - on the right, but if there is, you really need to unify that wall. I would start by painting it all a single color. Since the corner also seems dark, make sure you pick a color that lights and warms that corner. I would look at a warm color - a soft orange or yellow (NOT primary colors! ). And I would make sure that the art you put there is on the lighter and brighter side.
I would definitely move the light fixture. It is too small and too high. My instinct would be to hang it over the table next to the sofa, where LOVE is. I would take that down, and move the white planter somewhere. There is too much stuff going on right there.
I would take down the TV and put it on a low console (on wheels?) somewhere more functional or on a sleek stand.
Look for photos of things people have done with the under stairs space. There might be something on Houzz.com (spelling?) Those shelves look too high.
You didn't say if you like contemporary Scandinavian design or mid-century. Contemporary has a lot of neutral colors in natural fabrics layered. remodelista.com shows a fair amount, and you can Google for more. Save inspirational images and study them to see what you like and how you can adapt it.
If the couch is modular, you can divide it and have at least a section facing the tv. Maybe make an L shape with a side table between sections.
Thanks everyone for commenting - It really helps as I see the place isn´t right but I got lost on how to fix it..
Just some points: Yes, The couch is modular and I have tried to separate but it looks wierd, as it has "chunk arms".. but I think a side table making it a L shape could work.."
I think a big white low buffet under stairs is awesome idea.. I can hide all toys in there...
Yes Taureg, the different high isn´t helping, the windows and big window glass door (not on pictures) and front door are the same high but the restroom and tv are on diferent high and I will think about a way to change it..
LOVE the idea of hanging the pendant low near the couch, it is too small and high for where it is...=/
I like modern scandinavian!
D you guys think that a arm chair in front of the TV could work? Maybe low black comfy one; any thoughts?
Also, Any idea of a colour for new curtain, please? (The photos doesn´t show but there is too much light and heat coming in)
Hi Paula,
I would recommend setting the couch at an angle. I would start by pointing the far back corner of the couch toward the middle of the window and then aim the near back corner toward your dining room table. From there I would adjust the angle so that, (1) you can comfortably walk between the couch and the staircase, and (2) the near back corner doesn't crowd the sliding door too much.
I think you can gain a few inches of floor space between the TV and the couch without visually crowding the sliding door. Angling the couch also opens up the pathway to the door in the far corner of the TV room. (That door "feels" crowded right now, even if the door clears the couch when opened....) It also keeps the couch from pressing up against the curtains, making it look cramped.
Then I would start thinking about a coffeetable and get rid of the end table. And maybe add a lamp something like this:

I do love your table, but I think the space needs something larger and rectangular. Like a weatherbeaten wooden farm table. If it were possible, I would move the Knappa lamp over the dining room table (and maybe add a second one if a rectangular table were added).
Using your couch pillows color as an inspiration, I would put a (mainly) red rug (same size) on my wish list and get some very fun, very colorful pop art up on the TV wall.
If you wanted to use the same hardware over the window, I would put up a light blocking window treatment to block the glare of the sun on the TV and to make the window appear larger. (As it stands, you can tell that the window is much smaller than the area that the curtains cover when the sun shines through.)
Yep, it's a bad layout.what was the architect thinking? However, toucan work with this. First, turn your sofa towards the TV wall. Find a TV like a small console table. Ike's makes some good options. Put this console/media table between the two doors. Surround the TV art. I saw something like this on secrets from a stylist. I think it was the gunner episode. Put a coffee table in front of the TV and flank with small scale chairs that you can reposition easily. Replace the drapes with something lighter. Use a colorful dhurrie or other rug to ground the space.
@khinnj... Believe it or not there was a liittle flat upstairs with a carspace underneath, we decided to build a open plan living room downstairs , that's why it looks wierd... (i would rebuild everything if was planning to live here for long time, but we will move in the next couple of years!
