Despite our past record as a serial killer of houseplants, we've found an easy way to keep a basil plant alive......and all we did was to move it from the windowsill to the center of the table. When the plant looks thirsty, even at our most slothful, we can be can just slosh a bit of water out of a drinking glass into the pot.
We like the simplicity of this as a decoration—and since we've also been cutting back on fresh flowers for economic reasons, we're thinking that a small collection of potted herbs might be just as beautiful—but much more useful. We got the basil plant from Trader Joe's for around $5. Those with greener thumbs than us can also start plants from seed, which opens up many more edible plant possibilities. Arugula, anyone?
