Indie Furniture at CB2

Here in Portland, everyone’s a hipster. In fact, we’ve been known to travel to Goodwills and Value Villages out in the boonies, solely in hopes of finding furnishings that aren’t completely picked over by our black glasses-wearing brethren. But though we might be indie, we’re not convinced that we’d buy furniture labeled as such.

This is exactly why we’re so confused by CB2’s “indie” line. Sure, we’re a target demographic, but we still cling to the hope that we’re somewhat unique individuals. From the indie bed to the indie dining table to the indie credenza, the basic black collection might just be a little too obvious for us.

So, tell us, are you too indie for “indie”?

I think the bed looks like it's giving four people the finger.

CB2 is about as "indie" as any other chain retail store. But I have to say that regardless of the name, I like the bed.

i really don't get that bed. i think the 2 posters just look odd and dwarfed!

i don't know why they call the collection indie... it does rhyme with mindi... which is the type of wood veneer they used???

The furniture isn't indie at all -- it could practically be Ethan Allen.

i don't get what's "indie" about it. It's still mass produced. How can it be independent? Are they sourcing independent designers?
Plus, it's just a veneer over MDF, just like IKEA.

Lame - both in design and name...
...but I guess it's better than Brocade Home.

I think this is a good example of the marketing dept sitting too high up in their offices - IE they are too far from the street and are missing the boat. - I agree with the punk metaphor - do they think they are saying "come and buy this hipsters, this is for you...see"?

I can't say I am a big fan of the collection either. It is a little overdone at this point, enough with the dark would, parsons chairs, and straight lines already. I like the look of the "look" but this is too matchy matchy and overdone. zzzzzzzz

great post. i don't see how this style is 'indie' at all. its actually kinda boring. when i think of "indie," if i was made to even use that word to describe a style, i'd imagine an eclectic mixture of vintage finds, filled in with new clean-lined items. but yeah, this stuff is just boring.

if you're going to go to a chain store, anthro is way more 'indie.' nonetheless, i'm really glad AT called them out on this

So, it's "indie" in that you don't have to wash the dirt off of what you found on your sidewalk? The words "shabby" and "chic" continue to give me design nightmares, I hope they're not trying to pull anything like that.

I think the dining room looks really nice. But I wouldn't associate it with indie. To me indie is what the emo cutters grow into, so... no. This stuff looks too nice and clean for what I'd imagine "indie" would entail.

i think they mean "indie" as in 'modern indian' design. after i added these to my flickr style tray the mod from an indian architecture group went through every one and asked me to add it to the group pool.

I do love that top shot of the bed. They could call it "moon landing" instead; I'd still love it.

The bed reminds me of an upside down dining room table. Not the kind of look I'd go for.

I was scratching my head when I first looked at the pictures trying to see how on earth this was indie. Then I saw the ethnic looking pillows. Dumb. Oh when will the leaning pictures on shelves go away???

I think Lady J might be on the right track. I seriously doubt they meant indie as in hipsters. Does anyone even say that anymore? I suddenly feel like it's 1996.

I think you all are reading into the name the wrong way. Indie is probably in reference to Indonesia. They have a whole collection of items that have a Bali/ethnic feel that are not shown in the photos. Good grief people.

I neeeeed that sari runner. I love the Indie stuff, it would match the India theme in my bedroom, including the saris on the cieling.

Ace1 is right, its named after indie as in "west indies" or indonesia and india. how do i know? i work there. stop giving yourselves too much credit.
which reminds me, i bought a pair of undies the other day that had a sticker that said "hipster" cause it sits (golly) on the hips. you gonna hate on those undies too?

given the catalog copy for these items, as well as the individual names (taj, sari, india basmati), "west indies" is inaccurate. that being the caribbean islands and all.

frankly, the names indicate both india and morocco.

hahaha everyone on this post is making me crack up. everyone is so defensive/offensive about these "indie" labels and they are refering to india. that's one for the books. i like the table and credenza, but the bed has got to go.
