Who lives here? Emily Smith + Vincent van Haaff
Location: Vancouver, BC
Tell us about this home: Our house was built around 1912, and has very recently been renovated, with a more modern interior. The stove is a testament to the goal of breathing new life into an already charming living space. Made in the 1950s, this charming stove has been rescued, revitalized, and works unbelievably well.
My hobbies involve researching "pre-oil" technologies, and although I've been knitting for quite a while, I’ve more recently delved into spinning, knitting, and dyeing my own wool. I have to say, that it has really opened my eyes to the pace that things were created, pre-industrial revolution. I'm always researching more sustainable methods for spinning and less toxic dyeing, and try to avoid purchasing imported yarn whenever possible. I also host weekly craft nights, where we share ideas, projects, and cookies.
Composting and gardening are also big in my life. I plan to get a vegetable garden going come the spring, and love to see my food scraps turn into healthy soil. In the meantime, I try to buy food from local, small-scale farmers markets and co-ops, as much as possible.
Bicycle culture is rampant in Vancouver, and it doesn't stop with us. We ride our bicycles throughout the city, and aren't afraid to do our grocery shopping either on foot with a wheely cart, or by bicycle with trailor. We also advocate for the newly constructed bike lanes, and engage with friends and family members to start riding, or continue, and rain-proof, with fenders and rain pants.
Thanks, Emily!

Thanks for posting! :)
The same designer who re-finished this house has just purchased a new one in North Vancouver (Canada), I can't wait to see how it comes out! He started a website for it: http://skybungalow.com/
Hey Emily so good to see your place on here, your space is beautiful, love the backsplash colour in the kitchen and bathroom tiles. Where'd you find the bench for your wheel?
Emily, Great to see your house and what you have done with it. I love Apartment Therapy....it's what I unwind to every day. I am amazed at what people do with so little space ...they inspire me. I have just refinished two old dining room cabinets to use a tv cabinets and a bedroom shelf/dresser. Good luck with the job ! bev windsor on Canada
ooooh...I would love to see more blog post from you. Pre-oil technologies are sexy!
