Herman Miller has just announced the piece that is the 2011 addition to their Select program - a white ash version of the George Nelson designed round tray table. Like all of the annual editions, it is available for a limited time…
… so if you are interested, better start socking away the pennies. It's only available through February 6, 2012.
More info from Herman Miller on the choice:
First introduced in 1961, The Round Tray Table exemplifies George Nelson's belief that objects should be "designed to meet fully the requirements of modern living." His statement is as true today as it was during his tenure as Herman Miller's design director. Intended to serve as a multipurpose table for use in the home or office, the trim and elegant round Tray Table was originally offered in a walnut or teak veneer with a chrome pedestal tube and black enamel two-section base. The table was discontinued in 1964.
The 2011 Select Edition reinterprets Nelson's design with a jewel-like inlaid tray top in a striking sunburst pattern. The pattern is inspired by Nelson's 1955 clock design, "Flock of Butterflies." The 2011 table surface, based on Nelson's bold clock face, comes in a white ash veneer and is finished with a special process that arrests the ash in its natural, "fresh-cut" state. The white ash also presents a receptive backdrop to the exquisite inlay pattern. The sunburst inlay is created by juxtaposing walnut and santos palisander veneers in each diamond shape. Five-ply veneer construction, with inner plies of bay poplar, ensures the top remains stable through changes in humidity and years of use. A brushed stainless steel column and black umber steel legs support the tray top.
