Kristan Cunningham is the host of HGTV's Design on a Dime, where makeovers are done on a $1,000 budget. She and her boyfriend decided to bring her job challenge home by giving themselves a $1,000 budget for a kitchen remodel and home decor update. They bought discounted furniture and accessories from large chains and vintage stores to make their decor "1980s faux-French Normandy." Do you like the result?
Kristan Cunningham and her boyfriend rent their current home so did not want to invest too heavily in capital changes. You can see their budget breakdown by clicking here and read Kristan Cunnigham's "eight quick-fix tricks," which include layering area rugs.

White Enamel Four-P...
I especially like the chaise lounge (and placement) between the living area and the dining area.
Okay, I know that doilies aren't very popular around here, but I LOVE that collection above the bed! Me wants it!
What a genius idea, framing doilies and placemats like that! I am soooo stealing this.
Why is there only one photo of the kitchen that barely showcases any of the items outlined in the budget? It would have been nice to see a before and after and more actual photos of the kitchen. Just saying.
I really like the backslash in the kitchen and the general color scheme. Off topic, your mortgage company advertiser needs to knock it off with the flashing ads already. (Seems to strobe only on the home page.)
"blacksplash" Oops.
Nice place, too bad she can't do this kind of work on her show....
dmh-
there are more photos in the linked baltimore sun article...
First of all this place is gorgeous. I love her styke.
but.
This is extreamly misleading and this is why I spend my entire life explaining to people why the things they want cost so much. It rambles on about $1000, but if you read the captions and look at it with a critical eye, you very quickly realize that this cost somewhere in the vicinity of $15,000. The painting, unmounted by itself, without shipping from the UK was 1000 bucks. Sure the chair was from a vintage shop, but she had it reupholstered. I have a hard time believing that was under $1000. I can see at least $600 in accesories from Roost. There was a good chunk of change spent on this place.
I agree with kristian...this home was not re-done for under $1000.
Very neat, interesting space!
what a fun place - thanks for sharing and I would love to take a nap/read a book in that chair by the bay window =)
I loved the fact that those doilies were from her grandmother. I feel bad that i have absolutely NO heirlooms from my grandmother or mother. My parents are young enough that I am going to urge them to take up something so we have little mementos of her for future generations
i agree with kristian... the article is misleading. i think kristan does a great job on the show, but when it comes to her own home... the idea of "design on a dime" doesn't really carry. being an interior decorator, she obviously has a lot of nice stuff to begin with. the $600 worth of stuff from roost was probably in her possession before the makeover... so they don't count it in the final tally.
well, maybe i dont know how to read, BUT if we look at the budget (link was included), the $1000 was only spent on a few items (like knobs, handles, curtain rings, paint etc). so we shouldn't be surprised of the amount used to fix here and fix there.
anyway, it is a nice place and included or not in the budget, they have cool stuff.
I love that reading nook. I want to laze there with a book forever.
Someone, bring me some tea, please.
The bedroom incorporating the doilies is so beautiful. Considering the way the closet was laid out....was this a guest room? I wish I could mix and match rugs and get a look that cool.
Do I like it? Yes. Do I see where the money went? No, I'd need both PRE- and post- photos to see it. $2K for my entire house, sure, but I'd still be stuck with little or no architecture and the corner fireplace I hate but can't afford to tear out yet. I've tried "set dressing" away that awkward fireplace, and balancing for that chopped off corner, but in a tiny house it's definitely the awkward pause in the room. Do I envy the basic architecture and fab windows she had to work with? Heck yeah.
the little owls are my favourite part.
Before and after photos would really be helpful. I tend to agree the $1,000 headline is misleading. As kristian posted, they spent $1,000 on the large print in the dining room (before shipping expense, before stretcher costs, etc.)
Since this is a rental, a person could draw a line between costs sunk into a rental renovation (i.e. paint) and costs associated with her own personal property that she can take with her (i.e. the art)
Some nice inspiration; some things aren't my taste.
The budget breakdown is helpful because she sourced quite a few items from big box stores and outlets. However, part of me wishes she had shopped at Habitat for Humanity's ReStore, etc. So thrifty, and so 'green'.
The $1000 only refers to the kitchen remodel & not to the rest of the house. Kind of confusing since as someone noted above there aren't too many pictures of the kitchen as opposed to the other rooms.
Fantastic display with the doilies! I like her show 'Design on a Dime'. Always great ideas. Love her place.
She is one HOT babe.
But I no longer understand chic. I think the place has nice pieces, but just begs for a makeover. Edit, Kristen, edit!
Did I mention that she is ONE HOT BABE?
i think that show is trash but this space shows she actually can do design on a budget...
I agree with quiltmaster - very nice place, but just too much STUFF.
I like the bedroom wall frames alot they look good.
Didnt like the rest of the rooms that much. Too many things in the living room. looking a bit messy.
Jeanne
I really like the black ceilings!
I love "budget" remodeling. Her dining room chairs alone must have cost well over a thousand. If they weren't new, she was starting off from a pretty good place.
Love love love. Colors are wonderful. Kitchen esp. nice. I've just repainted the inside of my front door the same color as these kitchen cabinets, and now I am inspired to redo my kitchen, as well. The framed lace is awesome and an excellent example of the impact a large collection has. I love the color specific vignettes.
Does anyone know where you can buy the little owls she has lined up in a row in one of the pictures?
The freakin antlers ruined it for me.
I imagine most of the furniture came from her previous house which was a mid century modern. She's a vintage girl and knows how to shop.
HGTV's "Design on a Dime" is one of my favorite DIY design shows on television, and Kristan is one of my favorite hosts. Her $1,000 budget designs are fantastic and inspirational, so I knew whatever designs she created personally would not be less than fantastic. The slide show of her home proved me right! And, she loves vintage like me, so she could do nothing wrong decoratively in my book.

$1000 is just the budget for additional stuff - it doesn't include all the things that they already have in the place, or were re-purposed from their old places. the pics are great, i'd love for her to come by my place since we almost have the same name (first name is just a bit different)...
Not my style, but it looks pretty good. The only thing is, the place feels really cluttered to me. I really like the furniture the tv is on & the shelves over it- again, I would not want it so cluttered, but overall it looks great.
Does anybody know where I could find shelves similar to those in the living room? Thanks.
Love the framed doilies! Who knew doilies could look modern and chic? I am also partial to those orange chairs...alone they scream 70s lunchroom, but with the rustic accessories they look cool, for lack of a better word...
