It makes sense that cats are able to take care of their scratching needs in the absence of a human-made scratching post, usually in the form of scratching the bark off of a tree. With that in mind, Hicat created a cat post that most closely mimics a tree trunk, and makes for quite a design commitment to boot.

The custom configurations include short and long poles, different color fiber finishes, cubby holes at various heights and velcro bands with corresponding ball toys.

Right now they're only shipping within the UK, but wider distribution is in the works.

While they probably get pricey as they get taller, these are very clean and very architectural cat products for the home. I'd wager they make much less mess than the Kittypod.
many people happen to HAVE columns like that in their apartments - they're structural. could you DIY and wrap a structural pole in the stuff that kitty posts are made out of? jute, perhaps? (obviously you couldn't have one with holes in it)
Emmers, a few of those have been posted on AT before. There's a simple DIY version of this on the front page right now.
I have a post in my apartment and my mom desperately wants me to make it a kitty climber.
