Over at Apartment Therapy Chicago we featured our own home in today's house tour, but we wanted to give our Unplggd readers at a sneak peek at how we keep our DVD's. Since we've been having a few computer problems lately, we haven't gotten around to ditching our discs and converting them to digital. Instead, they hang out in our kitchen. That's where everyone keeps them right?
Each drawer has been alphabetized, kind of like a large winding snake. Although the cases have to sit on their side to fit in the drawers, we've made due without any other room in our small space to contain them. In the drawers above reside kitchen supplies essential to cooking, but covering the drawers with paper means no one knows the hodge podge of things we've been squirreling away.
Do you keep your media in an unusual room in your home? For brownie points, take the tour of our space and see if you can spot where we keep our Wii games (hint: it's extra romantic).

I thought that the original (hard copy) dvd or cd had to be kept even if you make a digital copy.
That depends on if you'd like to have a backup for your backup...
We keep ours in big caselogic binders that hold ~300 discs each that allow you to add/move sheets and end up saving a lot of space compared to even the slim jewel cases.
Put them in alphabetically or by category for data (we have different binders for blu-ray, video games, dvds, and software) and leave the back of a sheet or an extra sheet in between for additions, and they fit on a bookshelf or storage ottoman while still being super easy to flip through and add to when needed.
Hidden? Really? It's in a drawer.
I guess that means I have a hidden bed. It's hidden by sheets and a duvet.
I agree with rrbc up above - move your discs into binders and free up a ton of space (and also, recycle a ton of plastic).
I've been trying to talk the hus into doing this when we move to Denver, but not in the kitchen...
Thanks sarahrae - I was just thinking that there might be a legal problem though. Quoting from About.com -
You can sell or give away the original CD, but only as long as you no longer have any copies of the music in any format (unless of course you have another copy that has been legitimately paid for). You can not copy the CD onto your computer and load MP3’s of it onto your portable MP3 player, and then give the original CD to your best friend because you don’t need it any more.
Binders all the way. It was a bit of a wrench for about 5 minutes to throw out all of the cases and inserts, but then it just felt SO liberating. And I didn't have a pile of DVD-related crap on the floor in front of my TV anymore!
I wish IKEA still sold this piece. I love it and it's so versatile. DVDs in the kitchen? If it works, it works.
We store our in drawers, but by genre and then artist. Why ABC order? And why in the kitchen? Seems silly.
They're in the kitchen because that's literally the only place we have for them. Our space is small and we don't have any floor space for a more traditional cabinet or chest to hold them.
We do ABC order because we have so many movies (only half of which are pictured here) and my husband has a great memory, so he always knows what he's looking for.
The only thing I don't like about this is that from what I can tell the DVDs are in slim cases, not their originals which means you can't just open the drawer and look at the spine to see the movie titles (regardless of them being in alphabetical order). That would drive me crazy.
But if it works for you, then go for it :-)
