High and Low: Dog Beds

It's finally happening! After a year of looking at different types of dogs, getting landlord approval, and finding a pet that doesn't trigger my husband's allergies, we're finally getting a dog! We've adopted a very sweet retired greyhound racer. A big dog requires a few big purchases, including a dog bed that serves its purpose without being an eyesore. Since we're on the lookout, we decided to round up a selection of dog beds from high to low, for big dogs and small ones...

ok so for the eco friendly one on Etsy you're paying $50 just for the fabric...you have to provide your own pillow! its basically a pillow case with a snap on (my dog would have that off in 3 seconds) blanket!

Costco has some nice beds for about $25-$30. The selection does vary but the last couple sets I bought the covers had a contemporary design to them.

My two labs tend to sleep in my bedroom at night. I use two baby crib mattresses that slide under the bed when not in use. I have a couple sets of fitted sheets for the mattresses which makes cleaning easy.

None of the beds shown has an outer security pillow, which dogs really like. I highly recommend bowser beds:

Either the classic donut or the dutchie (I like the donut better because I take out the base pad and use it in the car, but the Dutchie is better if you don't have a front loading washing machine because the cover comes off the base pad).

Expensive, but easy to care for, very durable, and super comfy for the dogs. In fact, my niece and nephew always want to hang out in the beds when they come over!

oh, i forgot to mention. because our older dog sometimes has accidents, and just for general ease of cleaning, I bought a dog bed that came in a heavy plastic zippered bag. I removed the cover of the bed, put the pillow in the bag and then put the whole thing back into the cover. It took a minute for my dogs to get used to the sound but it works great and it keeps them from tearing the pillow with their nails.

Have to 2nd the Bowsers recommendation, quality for a decent price. And TONS of fabric patterns/colors to choose from.

My greyhound really enjoyed a second hand crib mattress that I covered with fleece, and layered with blankets. You could create any look you want.

Greys really need to stretch out sometimes, with those gangly deer legs. They also can do quite a bit of damage with their big dog nails as they scratch around prior to laying down. Mine ripped up foam beds almost immediately, but not the crib mattress.

Very clever, vjm! I'll keep that in mind if we ever adopt a greyhound (as I'm pining to do!).

Dang, that Costco bed is lovely ChzPlz! I belong to Sam's but I may have to find someone with a Costo membership to take me over there so I can get one of those.

We just got a Weimaraner... also long gangly deer legs, but we don't even use a dog bed. I just have a folded up blanket she sleeps on in one corner.

After viewing all these beds and reading the comments, I am guessing I should invest in a comfy bed?

What about dogs who sleep in crates at night? Put a bed in there too? Right now we just have a bunch of towels in there for her because i'm afraid she'll eat a bed or pillow.

Can you tell I've never owned a dog before?

suewanda: We use West Paw's econap bed for our crate. Its not super padded, so I have a blanket underneath. But, its made from recycled bottles & is very easy to wash & dry (it air dries very quickly). We also have the bumper bed, for a comfy nap spot outside of the crate (our pup loves this)!

My year-old Airedale ate a hole in her large fatboy this morning. There are tiny foam balls everywhere waiting for me to clean up when I get home.
She has the memory foam with canvas cover from LLBean downstairs and that has lasted through digging and chewing and puppyhood. It still looks like new.

our two cats sleep on a fatboy bed (dont tell them that its the one for dogs, we thought the cat one was too small for the two of them), and they love it! one even runs to his bed each night when he knows its time to go to bed. and it stays much cleaner and nicer looking than the first fabric bed we got them.

We have a 100 lb lab and got him the giant Fatboy bed bc I liked the way it looked. Problem is, he hates it. First of all, it took me forever to get enough of those foam balls out that he'd actually think about stepping on it. I must have taken 90% of them out and mind you, it's not a neat process. And even now that he can physically sit on it, he hates it. I think it's in part due to the fact that when he steps on the bed it slides around on the hardwood floor. We have a Drs Fosters & Smith bed that was half the price our dog still sleeps on. Oh well.

I have 3 dogs and 2 costco dog beds. $20 each and they still look like new. Plus, easy to clean and good for me cuddling with the dogs (they're not allowed on the couch).

I use a regular pillow in my dog's crate. I use a water proof liner and I bought a clearance sale set of pillow cases. When one needs washing I just change the case. It makes for a nice cozy little bed and couldn't have been cheaper.

Ah AT, how I love thee. We have hardwood floors throughout the house and our dog, Josh loves his foam bed we have for him upstairs (so much I was just trying to find another). Just tonight we were thinking about getting him a bed for downstairs.

When you're looking at shelling out crazy cash for a design you like, STOP. Get a bed that's reasonable and comfortable (Josh seems to love his 4" memory foam one we got him from Valley Vet) and just cover it with a blanket, throw, or whatever that works for the room it's in. Dog beds are typically ugly, and blankets are easier to wash than removing the covers on those things!
