Remodelista has a great list today of white dinnerware:

Thanks mschatelaine! Looking for great modern white dinnerware!!! Looooove the link and choices!!!
I have to say, IKEA can not be beat in this department. They have scores of simple white restaurantware style dishware and I always love their flatware. Plus the added benefit that you can usually buy in singles so you can build whatever size set you need, and if you break one it's a sure bet you can buy a single replacement piece for years to come.
I got my set (2 actually) online at Crate and Barrel and I love them. I read all the reviews and people kept praising this set. I can see why. They're attractive, durable, and go with other sets. An added bonus: They're $39.95 for a 16-piece set.

One last thing: three pieces broke in-transit. I called and they shipped replacements that day, no questions asked. Great customer service.
Timely post for me. I'm finally tiring of the rooster dinnerware we bought from Orvis when we were married seven years ago. I feel a bit guilty, because the Orvis plates are basically indestructible and there's really no good reason to stop using them.
I think the rooster motif is a good enough reason to stop using them ;)
I know this isn't as exciting as the other sets, and it doesn't have the flatware and glasses, but Target sells a great, sleek white set -Moon Coupe. Wide soup bowl, dinner plate, salad plate, and big mug. Sturdy enough to be as careless as I am washing dishes, delicate enough to showcase food. $40 for a setting for four -I just bought my third set for a big upcoming dinner party.
i love the fitzu line: "Whether you are on a budget..." for the $300 4-place setting. the morrison/allesi stuff is very nice, but i'd not consider it budget friendly.
fwiw: we're actually selling our knife/fork/spoon set (8 people) in the classifieds: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/classifieds
And yeah... I would have to like the "high" sets compared to the "lows".
Oh, man, I love this post. I'm looking for an affordable set of white dinnerware, and I think the C&B set that theorangismine suggested might be the ticket. I'll still check out Ikea, though, and the options linked to by mschatelaine. I'm in hog heaven, baby.
On a (somewha) related topic, any suggestions on where to find large, attractive coffee mugs similar to the oversized mugs Starbucks et. al. use (minus the corporate logo)? I don't know why I'm having trouble finding these, but I am...
rosenatti, Crate and Barrel has one that may suit you; Williams Sonoma usually has a bunch of plain white mugs also. I think Dansk used to make a very nice heavy one, not sure whether they still do. Another good place to look for things like this would be a restaurant supply store, like Economy Restaurant Fixtures on 7th St. in San Francisco.
I have the CB2 set (well, actually, just the plates and glasses) and am quite happy with them. The plates are not perfectly regular, though; they have a bit of unevenness that I've found gives them character but may not be to everyone's taste.
The glasses do break fairly easily, but that's because they're so thin. I wanted that look and decided it was worth ponying up for a few $2 replacements if need be. I've lost 2 of them in 18 months.
Bed Bath and Beyond Everyday White dinnerware. Pretty, inexpensive and is oven safe - not just microwave, actual oven. You can bake dinner on your plate and it can't be beat.
We have Crate & Barrel's Aspen dinnerware, which mix & match nicely with their Essential collection (which has smaller bowls). Four four-pieces settings of either is under $60.
We have C&B's Claire dinnerware, and I absolutely love it.

Just got a Rosenthal Loft White collection at a William Ashley sale. They had some amazing sets. 50% off. The girl next to me bought the whole set for $1200.
I ditto Astur's comment on Bed Bath and Beyond Everyday White dinnerware. We get lots of compliments on ours at every dinner party. People are surprised when we tell them the "brand". Also much less likely to break than some other brands we started out with.
The new Kmart Country Living line has some beautifully clean white dishes - and modern ROOSTER dishes!
